Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.): First match in Group B at this Confederations Cup in Brazil, in which the World Cup champions Spain had to face the Conmebol Champions Uruguay. Although Uruguay came with a lack of football level, there was a big expectation for this match. The atmosphere in Recife was not the best and there was a slight rain. The referee was Yichi Nishimura, the Japanese match official with a huge experience including a WC Quarterfinal and who already officiated these two teams in that tournament. But the match was a bit boring, Spain had the possession of the ball the whole time and Uruguay did not attack, furthermore there were some challenges for the referee team, most of them in their foul detection and their card policy.

Referee
Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.) Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referees decision Tense moment in the game, first Cavani uses his elbow and gets a YC, then 27-28 players ask for an elbow on Alba, which was not the case, in both situations the players asked for the red card an Nishimura seemed to have a lack of control. Ramos goes into a tackle on his opponent with both feet up, but he tries to break 77 and does not touch the Uruguayan player, yellow card is mandatory although red card is possible, he did not gave any of them Foul on Roberto Soldado not whistled by Nishimura, it was outside the box, but a 90+ clear DOSGO and a red card had to been shown. Nishimura was far away from the play since it was a counterattack.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points Smile, Nishimura is a referee who even smiles when he is mistaken, which gives 1. the match and the players a good message. Communication with the players, although he had a language barrier, the players 2. were able to understand him and he talked a lot with them, which was reinforced by 1. Although there were stages where he seemed to have lost control he was able to 3. regain it again without shouting at the players. Knowing the players, Nishimura knew the way players act in different cases what 4. helped him to prevent Suarez dives and some actions when the players magnified the fouls they received. Points for Improvement Card management, he lost several moments when he had to show the card according to his line, more consistency is need. Some bad fouls were ignored and 1. in one case the yellow card could have been red, without beeing a mistake (Arbeloas foul) Control of the match, when there were difficult stages of the match where he lost 2. the control for few moments, becuase of the protest and the clahes between the players linke in min28 and after the Sergio Ramos foul mentioned above. Use of the whistle, he always whistles long and loud, even when its not 3. necessary. That could be an improvement for the players to understand him easily. Teamwork, sometimes he took one decision and his assistant took a different 4. one, which should not happen. Positioning, in the first minutes he gave his back to Nagi and had to look back for 5. seeing him, with a better position he could avoid that.

The referees character Physical Aspects Fitness / Stamina Always close to play without interfering with it Flexible diagonal movement Positioning at set pieces Efficient positioning, having a good angle of vision to play Close to the penalty area, if needed Tactical Approach Description Yes Consistency in the tactical approach / style The tactical approach suited to the requirements of the match / the match benefitted from the tactical approach of the referee Ability to adapt the tactical approach if needed very lenient lenient medium x strict x So-so x x No very strict + Expected x x x x x -

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character) Always with a smile and making gestures for the players to understand him, he does not shout at the players and there is always a good atmosphere between players and him. Whistle use is not adequate, using it in a long and loud way for every foul. He keeps his YC in the short pocked, something he seemed to have changed after the funny scene in the Brazil vs Netherlands match in 2010 Word Cup.

Please assess the first assistant referees performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behavior Misunderstanding between Nishimura and Sagara, when both gave a different 47 signal.

Assistant Referee 2
Please assess the second assistant referees performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behavior 18 31 18 No-Offside given to Uruguay in a shoot that had a goal risk, wrong call Brilliant onside call by Nagi in Spains goal. One small location problem, comparable to Mullarkeys mistake in the 2008 Euro, he ran towards the corner when there was no defender, this time without influence.

Fourth Official
Please assess the fourth officials performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the fourth officials behavior No special involvement, not much to report, he also was always with a smile enjoying the match He was not so active like Brych in the Brazil 3-0 Japan match, but he stood always on the sideline so that he was able to pay attention to the match.
