Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.): First match for Uruguay and Croatia whose ties are to be played in Bursa, in the NorthWestern part of Turkey. The field conditions were overall satisfying, while not more than 3600 fans created a silent atmosphere. Croatia earned three hardly combatted points against the South American side that faced aggressive and sometimes really unfair Croatian players, who committed 26 fouls in total (Uruguay only 12). The referee of this match, Cameroon s Nant Alioum, had to consistently deal with this unsporting behaviour in a however not too demanding match. The match difficulty therefore was still normal, the referee showed a really good performance and has recommend himself for a second match.

Referee
Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.) Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referees decision The referee awarded a penalty kick to Croatia: Uruguay defender #3 had crossed Croatian forward #14s path of running and thus had touched him at his back heel 23 which had made him fall. Correct decision taken by the referee also thanks to his good positioning in this particular situation. Croatian player #7, who had been cautioned after only eight seconds in the first minute of play, committed a negligent but totally unintentional tackle against 59 Uruguays #15. The referee decided against a 2nd yellow card, which was possible, but not mandatory. So the decision was acceptable.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points High level of attention in most of the situations, having taken good free-kick 1. decisions based on a good feeling related to his foul detection. Understandable and predictable approach for every player. He had his line and 2. consistently applied it throughout the whole 90 minutes. Courage to take many minor decisions against the same team. He did not care about how many cautions he had already issued against Croatia and furthermore 3. dealt adequately with their repeated infringements of the Laws of the Game. In the end all five yellow cards went against Croatia and that was justified. 4. Alertness and prevention at set pieces, specially at corner kicks (11 ). Showed respect for the players when always waiting for them standing up and 5. having eye-contact while issuing yellow cards (e.g. 37). Points for Improvement He should improve his movement and specially footwork. He should be more in movement in the midfield and should avoid to stand still and rooted to the spot. In 1. some cases starting a sprint to follow a counterattack took him a bit too much time, so that he was postioned a bit too far away from play. Management of additional time. Three Uruguayan players needed medical treatment in the late phase of second half and it was not always clear whether 2. this was a means to waste some time on the clock. The referee was right in managing this treatment but should have awarded five or even six minutes of added time instead of only four. 3. More convincing and self-confident body language.

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character) Nant Alioum is a cool referee who takes his decisions in an unimpressed and sovereign manner. One of his pecularities is that his ball pen is located underneath his sweatband.

Assistant Referee 1
Please assess the first assistant referees performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behaviour The referee raised his flag for offside and thus stopped a possible Uruguayan 90+1 goal attempt or even equalizer: this decision was wrong. Uruguay forward #14 was slightly onside/level with the 2nd last defender. Apart from the above mentioned incident, a sovereign performance flagging a correct offside (78), signalizing a correct free-kick and potentially helping the full time referee in the penalty decision. As Alioum nodded into his direction, it seems he confirmed the correctness of this call via micro.

Assistant Referee 2
Please assess the second assistant referees performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behaviour 21 Offside decision which cannot be proven or falsified, as no replay was available. 34, 60, Offside decisions which were partly difficult to take, but all of them were correct. 85 Good performance with not so many challenges apart from this.

Fourth Official
Please assess the fourth officials performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the fourth officials behaviour The fourth official from Iran had no remarkable things to do except the normal full time technical duties and procedures. Well done.
