Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.):

Matchday 2 in Group E of FIFA Under 20 World Cup. The match, between Iraq and Egypt, was played in Antalya, at Akdeniz University Stadium, in front of an attendance of 3.246. Egypt, having lost the first match against Chile, needed to win, in order to keep hopes to qualify, while Iraq was in a slightly better situation, having drawn the first match against England. The referee appointed was Damir Skomina from Slovenia. The match in its progress presented a few remarkable situations to evaluate for the officials, but overall it wasnt really difficult.

Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.) Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referees decision Penalty appeal by Egypt. Kahraba (EGY) tries to cross the ball, which is touched by the arm of the opponent, Ali Faez (IRQ). The referee evaluates the handball as unintentional. The decision can be accepted. Both players are really close, there 24 isnt almost distance between them. Its anyway also important to underline that having the arm in that position was a dangerous action by the defender, because he clearly increased the volume of his body. Nevertheless, the fact that it wasnt a clear situation, suggest us to stay with the decision of the referee. After a save by IRQ keeper, Hassan Ahmed (EGY) tries to catch the ball, but there is a contact with a defender. The referee lets the game flow. The decision is 72 correct, because Hassan Ahmed seems already falling down by himself and the defender is able to reach the ball with his action. Neither penalty, nor simulation.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points Control of the game, which was not totally easy. Especially in second half, 1. Skomina gave warnings to players, showing his authority. Very good under this aspect, starting from the beginning of the game. Knowledge of the LOTG, giving cards in mandatory situations (example: pulling 2. the opponent, simulation). 3. Evaluation of crucial situations in penalty areas. 4. Ability to be accepted by players in his decisions.

Points for Improvement Management of added time: in second half he gave 3 minutes, a wrong choice. 1. There were 6 substitutions and at least 2 long injuries of players.

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character) Damir Skomina showed to be attentive to the play, sometimes we have talked about him as a lenient referee, but I must admit that in this match he was very good under this aspect. Giving cards for mandatory situations, so keeping a medium tactical approach, and at the same time gaining authority in the relationship with players using to talk and explain his choices in a clear way, even with gestures. This attitude should be taken as example for his next games. An approach like this is really positive.
