Referee
Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.) Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referees decision

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points 1. 2. 3. 4. Fitness/Stamina. He presented a very good level of fitness the whole 90 minutes. Foul detection. He had a good overall foul detection and he managed not to whistle every little contact. Advantage rule. Good applying of the advantage rule allowing the match to have a good pace. Card management in terms of tactical fouls. He punished almost every tactical infraction.

Points for Improvement Gestures. Surely a big part of his performance. He used strict gestures and maybe a little theatrical (min. 40) to warn players from both teams and maintain 1. control. This didnt worked well for him since the players clearly didnt respect him and he lacked authority. Respect and authority. 2 elements a referee should have. At this case he didnt 2. have any. So he lost control of the match especially after Colombias on ly goal. Influence from the crowd. Since it was a match of the host nation, one could 3. expect that the crowd would put the referee under enormous pressure. That happened and unfortunately the referee fell for it. Card management in other infractions of the LoTG. He missed some mandatory YC like in cases of executing a free-kick before the whistle or violating the 9.15 4. distance. He tried to resolve such situations only with gestures but didnt managed to.

The referees character Physical Aspects Fitness / Stamina Always close to play without inferfering with it Flexible diagonal movement Positioning at set pieces Efficient positioning, having a good angle of vision to play Close to the penalty area, if needed Tactical Approach Description very lenient lenient X Yes Consistency in the tactical approach / style The tactical approach suited to the requirements of the match / the match benefitted from the tactical approach of the referee Ability to adapt the tactical approach if needed So-so X X X No medium + Expected X X X X X X strict very strict -

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character) Even though the referee revealed a good knowledge of the LoTG and managed to have a good level of foul detection and card management (in cases of tactical fouls), he lacked the 2 most important elements a referee should have. Respect and Authority. Furthermore he tried to use his gestures in order to maintain control but at the end he lost control especially after min. 75. A better tactical approach needed/expected especially from a referee who is pre-selected for WC 2014.
