Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.): Second Semifinal of Confederations Cup repeating last years UEFA EURO 2012 Final between 2010 World Cup Champions Spain and UEFA EURO runners-up Italy. The match was played at Portaleza and presented an attendance of 0.000 spectators. Pitch and weather condition created the expectation for a very big match. Italy was better and created many efforts on goal but couldnt beat the Spanish GK Iker Casillas. Spain tried at the extra time to steal the win but couldnt. So naturally the match was decided on a penalty shoot-out. English Howard Webb was the appointed referee. The match wasnt very diff icult for the experienced official even though it was a Semifinal.

Referee
Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.) Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referees decision Penalty appeal by Spain. After a header from Pique (ESP) the ball hits to 95 Chiellinis arm. Webb waives play-on correctly. The distance between the header and the arm is below 1m and the touch is unintentional.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points Match control. He used his experience and authority to control the match. He had 1. superb control and managed to end the match without incidents. Foul Detection. Very good foul detection applying the English style and not 2. whistling every little contact. That helped the match flow and allowed us to watch a good game. Card Management and player management. He used his own style to manage 3. the players. He avoided cards for smaller infractions and issued only verbal warnings. Only 2 yellow cards that were completely justified. Co-operation with assistants. This team has worked together for many years and this was visible to the field. The referee relied on his assistants on some cases 4. and they presented the best outcome. Notably the YC on Pique for controlling the ball with his hand. The advice came from AR1 Mullarkey. Positioning and Fitness. He had a very good fitness allowing him to be always 5. near the action and to have the best possible position in order to detect almost every infraction. Points for Improvement Dives. His only weakness is that he fell for 2 dives giving very easy fouls right 1. outside Italys penalty area. He had too much talk with Xavi (ESP) especially in some fouls around the penalty area. Especially at min. 104 Xavi was protesting for the distance of the wall and 2. even though Webb whistled several times the Spanish player kept on protesting. The foul was executed after more than 2 minutes and it was really annoying. He could have cautioned him.

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character) Howard Webb is a very experienced referee with many important matches. So he used this experience in order to control the match. Furthermore his tactical approach which was suited to the requirements of the match contributed to an open match. The match surely benefited from the referees approach.
