Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.):

Last matchday in group D of FIFA Under 20 WC 2013. Both teams facing (Greece and Paraguay) had the same points, 4, and they were at the first and second place. So, big chances to qualify for the knockout phase. At the end, the final score of 1-1 led to a drawing of lots in order to decide which team was the first and which was the second position. The referee appointed was the Gambian Gassama, at his second match in this tournament, after USA-Spain. The match in its progress was really challenging, presenting a sending off already in the first part of first half, and then other controversial situations.

Correct decision by the referee. The Paraguayan player clearly stopped Diamantokis (GRE) which 24 was running toward the area in a potentially goal scoring opportunity. The ball was away. The fist YC for Gomez was given at 11, for a elbow, in a borderline situation. It might have been straight red card. Penalty appeal by Paraguay. Contact in area between Stafylidis (GRE) and Rojas (PAR). The referee doesnt evaluate the situation as enough for a penalty. We 39 can accept his decision because Rojas falls too easily, even though he is ahead the defender. Penalty appeal by Greece. Konstantinidis (GRE) falls down in area, the action by 51 defender is clearly on the ball. Correct decision by referee to let the game flow. Penalty appeal by Greece. Gianniotas (GRE) is fouled by Gimenez (PAR) in area. This time the referee takes the wrong decision. The ball was already passed 77 when the Paraguayan players clearly stopped the opponent in a irregular way. Penalty kick to be given.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points The teamwork was overall good. Assistants helped the referee in foul detection. 1. To be reported the YC given at 88 thank to AR2 advice. Personality of the referee and ability to be accepted by players. There were 2. several important decisions to take, and he appeared always sure. That is a good thing, apart from the real correctness of the decisions, of course. Attention to evaluate the position of the fouls (inside/outside the area). In the 83 3. minute he correctly gave a free kick, nevertheless it seemed to be a penalty. The foul happened just a few centimeters outside area. Points for Improvement Evaluation of elbows. It seemed that the YC for Gomez (PAR) came only after 1. having seen the blood of Greek player. At first, he had only whistled the foul. More attention to crucial situations in area, even though he took the correct 2. decision in the first two cases, he had to be alert when Greek player was clearly fouled. Avoidable mistake. The card management can be improved. He was reluctant in showing cards in 3. this match, even though there were possible situations. For example, after having given an advantage in second half, he might have booked the player. AR1 must improve his offside detection. The mistake made is really too blatant at 4. this level.

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character) The referee was quite lenient in this match. Probably, it wasnt the best choice, but at the end the performance was still acceptable under this aspect. The only clear mistake remains the missed penalty at 77. The referee has still small areas for improvement, because he can manage in a better way the cards. He should also give more the idea to the observers that he is inside the match, for example giving cards for dives and so on.
