Our Ref: 2013060002241 1 July2013 Jenny Jones City Hall The Queens Walk London SE1 2AA

Thank you for your letter dated 19th June concerning the Metropolitan Police Services response to Julian Assange and the Ecuadorian Embassy. In your letter you asked about the cost of our policing operation at the Embassy. The estimated cost of our operation between June 2012 and the end of May 2013 is 3.8 million, of which 0.7 million represents additional costs incurred as a result of increased overtime payments. The remaining 3.1 million are staffing costs that would have been incurred in the normal course of duties. Although the Metropolitan Police has not yet formally sought reimbursement from the Home Office for these costs, we are now in early discussions with Home Office officials regarding this. This is primarily a diplomatic matter and as a result the Foreign and Commonwealth Office are leading the government efforts to resolve this. The MPSpre closely involved in discussions over this and we will continue to reg2lrly review our approach.

Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe Commissioner
