Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.): Knock-out match for the round of 16 between Croatia and Chile. The match was played at Bursa (Ataturk stadium) with an attendance of 2329. Pitch and weather conditions were very good contributing to a very good match. Croatia was slightly better at the first half and had possession of the ball but Chile managed to score twice at the last 10 minutes and secure a place for the Quarter-finals. Walter Lopez of Guatemala was the appointed referee and had some situations that needed his attention. So match difficulty is Challenging.

Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.) Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referees decision Penalty appeal by Croatia. Niko Datkovic (CRO) makes an air pass and the ball hits on Cuevas (CHI) hand inside the penalty area. Lopez waives play-on since 9 the distance between the pass and the hand is too small and the hand is not deliberate. Peric (CRO) does a foul on a Chilean player and when Lopez gives it he 44 makes a gesture to the referee like saying You are crazy. Referee does nothing.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points 1. 2. 3. Foul detection. Good foul detection and no foul detection. Advantage law. He applied the advantage rule very good letting the game flow as much as possible and even waiting longer than the rule itself. Decision making. He revealed great awareness at the penalty appeal by Croatia and he could recognize all kinds of handball everywhere at the field of play.

Points for Improvement Positioning and movement in the pitch. More backwards movement is needed 1. and more diagonal. He shouldnt follow the ball becaus e that way he is putting himself too close to play. More consistency needed especially in cases of late challenges and when the 2. player has no intention to play the ball. He didnt punish every situation as needed. Match control and control of players. Situation on min. 44 is indicative of his lack of authority and determination to not tolerate dilutive gestures to 3. an official. Such occasions should and must be punished with a straight red card.

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character) He shouldnt be too lenient. Especially in cases when a player is mocking the referee or does a gesture that is dilutive. It shows disrespect for the official and creates a bad precedent for any match.

Assistant Referee 1
Please assess the first assistant referees performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behaviour He didnt have any offside calls. He was alert at his area of vicinity and helped the Full time referee with any foul near him. Only 1 onside call but with minor difficulty.

Assistant Referee 2
Please assess the second assistant referees performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behaviour Only 2 offside calls the whole game (1 correct and 1 not). He appeared attentive Full time near his area and helped the referee with foul situations. 16 Fuentes (CHI) is flagged for offside. Correct decision. 25 Cuevas (CHI) is flagged for offside. He was at least level. Mistake.

Fourth Official
Please assess the fourth officials performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the fourth officials behaviour He didnt face any problems since everyone at the technical area was behaving Full time with outmost profession. All technical procedures were executed adequately.
