Steneby is an international learning
environment for material based art i stic,
design and vocational educations. We
are two schools: Stenebyskolan host
to university prep aration and voca tional
programs, and Steneby the School
of Craft and Design Uni versity of
Gothen burg, the host of BA and MA
programs. The school has a long his-
tory and tradition of working with
forged metal and our educations have
evolved from skills based educations
towards material based artistic educa-
tions that is not to say that ideas of
craft and skill are less important to us.
We often talk about three key words at
Steneby: Investi ga tion, Material and
Skill. We have the skills to say new
things with tradi tional materials and
techniques, and traditional ways of
working with new mate rials, process
and ideas. Investigation is key, through
material, through process and through
context.

Grow 2012
Grow 2012 r ett projekt som handlar
om det grna i vr omvrld dr kloro-
fyll, syre och vxter, en frutsttning
fr mnskligt liv, p ett lekfullt och
ovntat stt hittar in mnni skors hus
och hem. Utgngspunkten har varit att
p ett utforskande och vision rt stt
laborera med mbler, rum och verk-
tyg samt att lta vxt lig hetens kraft
styra vra under sk ningar i syfte att
kommu nicera alternativa lsningar.
Genom kunskap om material, ski cklig-
het i utfrandet och med utforskande
arbetsmetoder tror vi p en framtid
med mbler som kar livskvalitn fr
brukaren och uppmanar till nya mten
mellan mnniskor, vxter och natur.
Projektet har hand letts av avdelningens
lrare Franz James och sa Nystrm.
Speciellt tack till rets curator Peter
Andersson samt trdgrdsdesignern
Simon Irvine som varit gstkritiker
och inspiratr under projektet.

Grow 2012 is a project about the
gre en in our environment where chlo-
rophyll, oxygen and plants, a pre-
requisite for human life, in a playful
and unexpected way fnds its way into
peoples homes. The starting point
has been to experiment with furniture,
space and tools in a exploratory and
visionary way. We allow the power of
vegetation to direct our inquiries as a
way to communicate alternative solu-
tions. Through knowledge of mate-
rials, skill in execution and explora-
tory methods, we believe in a future of
furniture that will increase the quality
of life for the user and calls for new
encounters between people, plants and
nature. The project has been super-
vised by the teachers at the depart-
ment, Franz James and sa Nystrm.
A special thank you to furniture desig-
ner Peter Andersson, this years cura-
tor, and landscape architect Simon
Irvine, guest critic and inspirer for this
project.

potential.
A simple idea of how to use scrap
pieces of wood found in a workshop.
The scrap pieces are lathed and drilled
into a shape which resembles a test
tube. One then puts soil into the tube
with a seed and grows it indoors. Once
the plant becomes too big, one breaks
the test tube in half and plants it out-
doors where Mother Nature hopefully
will take care of the plant and let it
grow to its full potential.

To me, the question of growing is inti-
mately related to the question of soil,
place and land. And maybe most im-
portant, us humans. To me, the texts are
in different ways peoples relationships
to these phenomenas. The piece is my
answer to these texts, together they
create a beautiful dialog. Thanks to

Lusthus och rumsavdelare r inspira-
tionen fr denna stol. Huvudsyftet med
detta projekt r att fra in naturen i
huset och tillhandahlla ett enskilt rum
omgivet av vxter dr man kan njuta
av en frsch och lugn atmosfr. Tre
faktorer r ndvndiga fr att f denna
id till stnd: vxter, krukor och en
trbyggnad som inte bara tillter vx-
ter att vxa och tcka det hela men som
ven fungerar som en rums avdelare.
En grn stol sknker oss fr delen av
att njuta av naturen inomhus.
Gazebos and space dividers are the
inspi ration of this chair. The main
objec tive of this project is to bring
nature into the house providing indivi-
dual space surrounded by plants where
one could enjoy a fresh and calm atmo-
sphere. Three elements are necessary
to round up this idea: plants, pots and a
wooden structure that not only allows
plants to grow and cover all of it but
also works as a space divider. A green
chair gives us the beneft of enjoying
nature indoors.

Den r sjlvbevattnande, ltt att fytta
och behver ingen jord, jordens n-
rings mnen tillstts istllet i vattnet.
Bevattningen regleras auto matiskt av en
timer och styrs av en liten tyst energi-
snl luftpump som kan driva tv enheter.
P ett nytt stt vck er den intresse fr
odling och genom anvndandet minskar
den p utslppen av vxthusgaser frn
lngvga transporter av kryddor, grn-
saker och jord.
Sprout, a growing rack that saves up
space by planting vertically. It is self
watering, easy to move and needs no
soil, the soils nutrients are added to the
water instead. The watering is auto-
matically regulated by a timer and is
controlled by a small silent energy
effcient air pump that can operate two
units. In a new way it inspires interest
in growing and through the use it helps
to reduce emissions of greenhouse
gases from long distance transports of
herbs, vegetables and soil.

att ge dem tillrckligt med ljus och
skapa en god milj fr dem. Varje
lda med handtag skapar ett utrymme
fr vx t erna nr vi placerar ldorna
p varandra. Det r enkelt att ta isr
och stapla dem. Nr vi br och staplar
dem mste vi ocks ta hand om en hel
balans mellan hger och vnster, pre-
cis som ett trd i naturen. Jag hoppas
att vi kan kommu nicera med vxt erna
genom att arran gera dem sjlva.
This is furniture as a tool, in which we
carry and arrange plants wherever be-
tween rooms and balcony to provide
enough light and proper enviroment
for them. Each box has handles that
creates a space for plants between the
boxes when stacking them. It is easy
to to take the boxes apart and to stack
them together again. We have to take
care of a whole balance between left
and right like a tree in nature. I hope
that we can communicate with plants
by arranging them by ourselves.

dags att ta in trden. Forskning visar att
vistelse i lvskog minskar stress och
mental ohlsa. Enligt tester terhmtar
man sig effektivare frn stress i en virtu-
ell lvskog med naturljud n i en van-
lig, lugn inomhusmilj utan naturljud.
I kontor med mycket vxtlighet min-
skade negativa sinnesstmningar och
stressknslor bland de anstllda med
60 procent. Vxterna minskade ocks:
Spnning/Oro med 37%
Depression/Uppgivenhet med 58%
Ilska/Fientlighet med 44%
Trtthet med 38%
Frvirring med 30%
Ljudet av Skog r en lekfull uppm a n-
ing att ta dessa resultat p allvar.
Cities are getting more dense. Stress
is increasing. Its time to bring trees
inside. Research shows that spending
time in a leaf forest reduces stress
and mental illness. Tests show that
recovery from stress is more effcient
if done in a virtual leaf forest with
sounds of nature compared to a nor-
mal calm indoor enviroment without
sounds of nature. In offces with plenty
of greenery, negative mood states and
feelings of stress was reduced by up to
60 percent. The plants also reduced:
Tension/Anxiety by 37%
Depression/Dejection by 58%
Anger/Hostility by 44%
Fatigue by 38%
Confusion by 30%
The Sound of Forest is a playful call
to take these results seriously.

I rternas och brens djungel fann vi
bde nyttiga och goda egenskaper. Det
hr var vi tvungna att gra ngot av.
Vi skapade en plats fr att torka och
bevara det man odlar hemma, eller vad
den smakrika naturen har att erbjuda.
Systemet kommer i tre enheter och
r stapelvara fr att spara plats. Varje
enhet r isrtagbar och sparar mer plats
nr torknings perioden r ver. Det som
kan torkas begrnsas endast av ditt
behov. rter, br och fruktskal, vad r
din favorit?
In the jungle of herbs and berries, we
found properties that are both healthy
and tasty. We just had to do something
about this. We created a space to dry
and preserve what you grow at home,
or what the wild has to offer. The sys-
tem comes with three units that are
stackable to save space. Each unit can
be disassembled to save even more
space when the drying period is over.
What you dry can only be limited by
your needs. Herbs, be rries and fruit
peel, what is your favorite?

Sprout Table passar lika bra som
frukost bord hemma i kket som i en
bistro eller ett kaf, varje bord med sin
egen unika grna bordsduk.
The Sprout Table combines tradi-
tional craft and contemporary design
in a new way. Traditional weaving
patterns, the easy handling of edible
sprouts and the long lasting life of
handcrafted furniture inspired it.
Inter action with plants strenghtens
the awareness of enviromental issues.
Combining traditional craft, contem-
porary design, material and the grow-
ing sprouts boost the appreciation
for food, craft and sustainability. The
Sprout Table could be used at home
as a breakfast table or in a bistro/caf,
where every table could have its own
green tablecloth.

De stora facken r anpassade fr
odlingsldor och krukor men rymmer

av tr och glas. Glaslocken kan du
anvnda fr att driva upp sm frn. Du
kan odla frn till grnsaker, blommor,
stta sticklingar eller frgro potatis.
This table is for the grower, or any-
one who wants to start growing. The
table has six compartments, two large
and four small. The compartments are
water-resistant zinc boxes that you
can lift out. You decide how many
compart ments of the table you want
to use for cultivation. When it is not
growing season, you can use the table
for storage. The large compartments
are adapted for cultivation boxes and
pots, but can also contain journals or
books. The box lids are made of wood
and glass. Glass lids can be used to
power up small seeds. You can grow
seeds of vegetables, fowers, or pre-
grow potatoes or other plants.

Felix Wink
Vi roffar t oss av naturen och fro-
renar vr milj, trots det delar vxterna
osjlviskt med sig av sina ovrderliga
positiva egenskaper till oss. Jag har
frskt hitta en ny, nrmare, vxtplats
fr vra vxtvnner fr att frstrka
de sinnliga intrycken och de positiva
egenskaperna. Jag ville utforma stolen
s att man kan ta del av detta oavsett
om man sitter i den eller inte, och
drtill ge vxterna en chans att ta en
strre, mer originell, plats i vr vardag.
We take what we want from nature and
poison our enviroment, despite that
we get invaluable positive qualities
from our unselfsh plants. I have tried
to fnd a new, closer, growth place for
our plant friends to make the sensual
impression and positive qualities even
stronger. I wanted to design the chair
so that you can take part of the plants
whether you use it or not, as well as
give the plants the opportunity to take
on a bigger, more original, part in our
everyday life.
