Market Tote

In Lynn Schmitt’s book, The Art of Mixing Textiles in Quilts, this tote pattern offers two variations. They are identical in their shape, form and basic construction, but there are design differences in how the elements of the bag are articulated. The first version, Market Tote with Appliqué, is what we’re sharing here: it has pieced front and back panels. The front is accented with wool appliqué and couched yarn in one of Lynn’s favourite motifs: the poppies of the Umbrian region of Italy.

Lynn first conceived the Market Tote project to showcase how to use an Eclectic Bundle* — a mix of 16 different textiles in small cuts that express a colourway and are diverse in their scale, fibre content, sheen and texture.

Finished tote: 46cm (18in) wide x 40cm (16in) high x 20cm (8in) deep
