    1 THE Eastern Region's King's Lynn engine shed was demolished in a most ironic way ... it was pulled down by one of its own locomotives. The engine forced to perform the grisly task in August 1960 was 'Jl7' class 0-6-0 No. 65513.

    A long chain was attached to its drawhook and it was reversed through the by-then roofless depot, tearing the brick walls down as cloth-capped and bare-headed workers stood just feet away. R s McNAUGHT

    2 IN 1969, the year after the official end of BR steam, 'A3' No. 4472 Flying Scotsman wasn't the only steam locomotive to operate on the main line. On April 11 that year, 'J27' 0-6-0 No. 65894 ran under its own steam for more than 20 miles from the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group's base at Philadelphia, in County Durham, to Thornaby diesel depot for axlebox attention.
