WALT WHITMAN AWARD
A prize of $5,000, publication by Gray-wolf Press, and a six-week residency at the Civitella Ranieri Center in Umbria, Italy, is given annually for a poetry collection by a poet who has not published a book of poems in a standard edition. The winning book will also be distributed to 5,000 members of the Academy of American Poets. Harryette Mullen will judge. American Academy in Berlin
BERLIN PRIZE FELLOWSHIPS
Residential fellowships are given annually to fiction writers and creative nonfiction writers to spend an academic semester in residence at the Hans Arn-hold Center at the American Academy in Berlin. Fellows receive a $5,000 monthly stipend, lodging, partial board, and round-trip airfare. Writers based in the United States who have published at least one book of fiction or nonfiction are eligible. Submit two writing samples totaling no more than 60 pages, a project proposal that includes an excerpt from the proposed project, and a curriculum vitae by September 23; submit three letters of recommendation (sent directly to the Academy by the references) by September 30. A Public Space
A PUBLIC SPACE FELLOWSHIPS
Three six-month fellowships of $1,000 each are given annually to emerging fiction writers and nonfiction writers who have not published a full-length book. The fellows will work with the editors to prepare a piece for publication in A Public Space and will also have the opportunity to meet with publishing professionals and participate in a public reading in New York City. For fellowships from March 2020 to September 2020, using only the online submission system, submit a short story or essay of any length with a cover letter and a brief written statement between September 15 and October 15.
