SERUM FX

Unless you’ve been living under a music tech rock, you’ll know about Xfer Records’ smash hit synthesizer Serum. One of the market leaders in wavetable synthesis since 2015, Serum has found its way into many of dance music’s biggest hits as a staple synth for pro producers including the mouse-headed EDM star Deadmau5 and more. Besides its immaculate sound quality and simple interface, a big part of Serum’s success is its array of high-quality effects processors like the lush-sounding chorus, beefy multimode distortion and handy two-band EQ. These effects can be chained together in a series configuration of your choice, opening up fresh possibilities for sound design.

What you might not be aware of, however, is that Serum’s heavyweight effects section can also be used in its own right as a multi-effects unit on any audio or instrument channel in your DAW via the included Serum FX VST/AU plugin. This allows you to use any combination of Serum effects to spice up boring audio signals, or add that unique Serum feel and workflow to other softsynths.

To guide you along the path to multi-effect heaven, we’ve put together an unmissable guide to help you make the most of Serum’s FX plugin. Over the next few pages, expect some expert tips and tricks ranging from triggering Serum FX’s modulation features via MIDI, drum processing and bass sculpting through to clever pad modulation hacks and a full rundown on the ten effects under Serum’s hood.
