Intihuatana Stone

Located in the Sacred Valley, the four-sided Intihuatana ritual stone pointing north, south, east and west was carved from a single piece of granite and is understood to have been used as a sun dial and possibly an astronomical observatory. The Incas had a spiritual connection with the rock and would use a stepped recess as an altar. It would indicate the time of the winter solstice.
