4. DETAIL AND SUGGESTION
Contemporary painting is defined by the idea that, since the invention of the camera, painters cannot merely reproduce their subject, but must create a different, more creative reality. While this is true, it does not follow that all of the Old Masters were, by contrast, slavishly wedded to the faithful replication of detail – quite the opposite. The very fact that there were no cameras to easily and faithfully record a subject made the techniques of evoking detail central to traditional painting.
