The first time I went camping in Colorado, I was woefully ill prepared. A flatlander hiking in the Maroon Bells, I ignored my I felt any blisters forming inside my new hiking boots. Valuing stoicism over intelligence, I failed to let him know I was in pain until we reached our first night’s campsite, at which point I took off my boots and realized that my heels were raw and my socks soaked in blood. Big mistake.
