The day war in Europe came to an end…
This is one of the most significant days in British history – 8 May 1945. Known variously as Victory Day, VE Day, V-E Day or V-Day, this day 75 years ago marked the securing of victory in Europe for the Allies in the Second World War as the leaders of Nazi Germany accepted the offer of unconditional surrender.
In 2020 we planned ahead, aiming (Corona virus not-withstanding) to celebrate the day with the movement of our traditional Bank Holiday from a Monday to a Friday. Back in 1945 all across the country celebrations had to be organised ‘on the hoof’ as news of the surrender came to light.
What the papers said
Events surrounding VE Day were recorded in newspapers and magazines across the land. On that very day the front page of the and in Clackmannanshire, Scotland, carried an advert for flags, streamers and victory fobs. ‘Don’t delay’ and ‘get to Betts’s Shop’ the banner headlines screamed.
