The showcase gardens developed by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild and his younger sister Alice on adjacent estates in Buckinghamshire are the foundations of the spectacular Waddesdon Manor and Eythrope gardens we know today. “In 1874, Ferdinand bought around 2,700 acres from the Duke of Marlborough to create his own country estate,” explains garden historian Dr Sophie Piebenga. “He employed Hippolyte Destailleur to design the manor house in the style of a 16-17th-century French chateau and Elie Lainé to lay out the garden. They had already worked together on the restoration of Vaux le Vicomte.” Once
