About this audiobook

In "Center of the Universe," God struggles to balance the demands of his career with the needs of his long-term girlfriend. In "Magical Mr. Goat," a young girl's imaginary friend yearns to become "more than friends." In "Unprotected," an unused prophylactic recalls his years spent trapped inside a teen boy's wallet. The stories in Simon Rich's new audiobook are bizarre, funny, and yet...relatable. Rich explores love's many complications-losing it, finding it, breaking it, and making it-and turns the ordinary into the absurd. With razor-sharp humor and illustrations, and just in time for Valentine's Day, Rich takes listeners for an exhilarating, hilarious ride on the rollercoaster of love.

Started and finished this in about forty minutes (didn't even take up a whole flight from Anchorage to Fairbanks). First story is far from the best, so don't be turned off by it. I really, really enjoyed the cleverness of the writing and highly recommend despite its disappointing brevity.

Don't get my rating confused: 3 Stars Does NOT Mean "I Liked It". Three Stars is "Average", or MEH~! That being said, here's my review:

The Last Girlfriend on Earth and Other Love Stories, Simon Rich

    &#9733 &#9733 &#9733

So this is how men think? What a bunch of weirdos.... I mean seriously, these stories were odd. How about God's girlfriend, marrying Sister Teresa, the last girlfriend on earth, a boyfriend w/ a magic lamp & 50 wishes, the secret life of a condom? Do you get my drift? Seriously Weird.....

The book was broken down into three parts: Boy Meets Girl, Boy Gets Girl, and Boy Loses Girl.

Although I did like two of them: "Center of the Universe" which was about God & his whiny girlfriend and "Girlfriend Repair Shop" which was actually funny.

Absolutely hilarious. Funniest short story collection that I have ever read. I will now be impatiently waiting for the next Simon Rich masterpiece to surface, and then the next...etc. One story is about relationships and how boyfriends can be traded. There is a trade deadline, statistics, contracts, etc. It's basically baseball w/ boyfriends. Hilarious. Love it. My wife loved it as well.

hilarious book! each story feels fresh, but has that ring of familiarity. only thing is, the book seems too male-centred...though it was of course written by a guy, who presumably wrote from his own view point as that would be his own area of expertise, so maybe this was intentional. but nearing the end of the book, i found the imbalance in the pov more than a tad bothersome.enjoyed the stories, though.

These short (in fact relatively short short) stories are as varied in concept as they are similar in theme and execution. All are about dating, unrequited love and breakups, mostly people who seem to be in their twenties and act like they're from New York. the stories are organized in three sections: "Boy Meets Girl", "Boy Gets Girl" and "Boy Loses Girl". They are generally slightly dark, bitter and recount completely stereotypical relationships but set them in completely bizarre contexts. To list a few:

--One is told in the first person from the perspective of a condom who spends most of the story in a wallet, several years in fact so when he is pulled out for use he is past his expiration date so he ends up in a box of memorabilia from the relationship.

--One is titled "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and it, literally, is about someone catching their mother having an affair with Santa Claus and then watching them fight because he keeps postponing his promise to leave Mrs. Claus.

--One is about God, it goes through the first he created the universe, the second day he separated the oceans from the sky, and then "On the third day, God's girlfriend came over and said He'd been acting distant lately. 'I'm sorry,' God said. 'Things have been crazy this week at work.'"

--And one is about the "Sirens of Gowanus", which is a bunch of Sirens in the Gowanus Canal singing Arcade Fire songs.

Each story is amusing, creative and a breeze to read. Together they're a little repetitive, but I read them over about two months and enjoyed returning to the collection.

This is a slim volume of humorous essays. I read Rich's previous collection of essays and really enjoyed them. These are also pretty hilarious. These are tightly bound around the themes of love and dating and relationships. Some of them are laugh out loud funny - some are just wacky and some so bizarre you have to wonder about the person who wrote them. Some of the stories come a little close to crossing into misogyny but in the end I think there is enough exposition of characters to allow you to understand where they are coming from in their frustrations and generalized unhappiness with women. Its a quick, quirky read that I think many will enjoy.

Damn, Simon Rich has written some fun stories.A few of these, the best, I'd say, I'd heard on the Selected Shorts podcast, read aloud at Symphony Space in New York. My favorite in the bunch is "Unprotected," the story of a condom, told from the point of view of the condom. "Center of the Universe," about God's relationship during the course of Creation is another sparkling story. There weren't too many dead notes in the bunch (I didn't like "Occupy Jen Street" when it was read on Selected Shorts, either, "Children of the Dirt" is a little dull), and most of the stories sing out. Some weren't quite dead, they were just less entertaining, a little more empty ("Setup," the story of being set up with a troll was a funny premise but fell a little flat for me, "Victory" was cute but, again, just left me feeling a little hollow, like I'd eaten cotton candy or something). If you get a chance, go listen to them on the podcast, and grab yourself a copy of the book for other little gems like "When Alex Trebec's Ex-Wife Appeared ohm Jeopardy" and "NASA Proposal."

While I am not usually a fan of short stories, this collection sucked me in. Quirky, imaginative, and absolutely riotous, I laughed my way through. I couldn't pick a favorite story if I tried and while reviewing this book, I kind of want to read it again.

I picked up this book on the discount rack because it looked interesting, and it was half off. ( Who deosn't like discounted books?.. if you say you don't, you're lying)

I didn't laugh at all of the stories. One or two made me smirk, but laught? Not at all.

It was more of a what if book, with some humour thrown in to make you believe it's suppose to be something more.

I was more than a little disappointed :(

If you want a fast read that will make you think or just something to pass the time on a plane ride, then please have a look.

    Cheers

So so so so funny. Perfect if you like the work of David Sedaris, Tina Fey, or awesome things, in general. I LOL'd on numerous occasions, which is my highest praise.

Read from May 08 to 10, 2013Story 1: "Unprotected" - Hahahaha! The life of a condom...it's kind of like a forgotten toy.Story 2: "Magical Mr. Goat" - some guys...I mean, goats...don't understand "I just want to be friends" and "I'm not at all attracted to you."Story 3: "Occupy Jen's Street" - Some people will protest anything...even girls who date other guys. The last paragraph = great point!Story 4: "Dog Missed Connections" - The title covers it. Hilarious! (Reminds me of the cat poems and the dog poetry collection coming out soon.)Stories 5&6: "Sirens of Gowanus" and "Cupid" - Greek Mythology is full of fun tales. The Sirens will still eat your face and Cupid is still to blame for anyone not falling in love. Story 7: "Set Up" - You know how people are always like "how did that attractive person end up with THAT person?" Or you wonder if you'll ever find someone to love? This guy has that problem and he asked his friends for help...bad call.OK...so EVERYTHING is fantastic and by Story 8 I knew it wasn't necessary to write something about every story. So funny and many are so full of truth (I LAUGHED OUT LOUD many times). "NASA Proposal" and "Archaeological Excavation Report: Ludlow Lounge" were a couple of favorites. "The Present" was unexpectedly sad. I tried to make Jesse read every story, but he just got annoyed with me.

Cute book. Very easy reading. Read in about 2 days. Book has about 2 dozen short stories in it. Most will make you chuckle
