About this audiobook

With the same incomparable style and warm, inviting voice that have made her beloved by millions of readers far and wide, New York Times bestselling author Fannie Flagg has written an enchanting Christmas story of faith and hope for all ages that is sure to become a classic.
Deep in the southernmost part of Alabama, along the banks of a lazy winding river, lies the sleepy little community known as Lost River, a place that time itself seems to have forgotten. After a startling diagnosis from his doctor, Oswald T. Campbell leaves behind the cold and damp of the oncoming Chicago winter to spend what he believes will be his last Christmas in the warm and welcoming town of Lost River. There he meets the postman who delivers mail by boat, the store owner who nurses a broken heart, the ladies of the Mystic Order of the Royal Polka Dots Secret Society, who do clandestine good works. And he meets a little redbird named Jack, who is at the center of this tale of a magical Christmas when something so amazing happened that those who witnessed it have never forgotten it. Once you experience the wonder, you too will never forget A Redbird Christmas.

This was a wonderful feel good Christmas story. Oscar Campbell heads off to Lost River Alabama for the clean warm air to help with his emphysema. He has less than a year to live according to his doctor. He ends up staying. The quirky residents in this village, the creole village across the river, the small towns near by as well as the transient farmers and their offspring all add information and enjoyment to this story. Roy, the store owner rescues a red bird that has been hit by pellets. He is surprised that the bird survives the night and he becomes a pet. Everyone in town loves Jack and when Patsy, the little crippled orphan, falls in love with Jack, magic happens. The ending is a wonderful Christmas miracle.

Fanny Flagg books lift the spirits and show that humans still exist. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audio version of A Redbird Christmas. Yes, I did feel that the Southern charm heavily clouded everyday problems, but each person dealt with issues and the result displayed the human condition of forgiveness and love. The story centers on Oswald T Campbell, a Chicago native told he has terminal emphysema, and this will be his last Christmas. Oswald, on the advice of the doctor travels to Lost River, Alabama, to enjoy the Southern warmth both physical and emotional. The story covers over a year, as Oswald meets the community of Lost River and begins to enjoy life. The characters encompass many faucets of life: the owner of the store, Roy Grimmit, who gives all his love to a redbird, the lady responsible for Oswald moving to Lost River, Frances Cleverdon, who hopes Oswald will marry her sister, Patsy, the crippled girl with no family, and of course, Jack, the redbird. Tragedy does happen, but miracles step in to show the wonder of God and human nature.

A Redbird Christmas was an okay read with a witty main character, but the shortlisted the mark in areas that mattered to me. The majority of this story was the telling of a simple, small-town life, which was nice, but pretty humdrum. But then there is the ultimate no-no... A Christmas book in which Christmas has such an incredibly small part in the story. Boo.

A perfectly heartwarming novel to read at Christmastime. It will lift your spirits and cause you to believe in a Christmas miracle. Oswald moves to the town of Lost Rivers for his health. Little does he know that the move will affect more than just his health. It's a wonderfully quick read. Perfect for the holiday season!

ReviewLoved this book! A lovely story. It is bittersweet,it has humor,it has hope. LOVED IT. Fast quick read also! About 200 pages. Excellent character development! It had a nice flow to the story as well. My ONLY complaint is that every loosed end is tied up at speed of light in the last 5 pages. I do not understand why authors do this! Are they tired of writing the story? This ruined the flow of the story for me,I am glad it tied up loose ends but it could have been done better.

This is the whimsical story of a hard-luck orphan, Oswald T. Campbell, mostly named for the can of Campbell's Tomato [T:] soup found in the basket with him. Given only a month or so to live, his Chicago doctor sends him to Lost River, Alabama, where a sanitarium once was located. He is quickly absorbed into the warm and friendly community of this wee village (pop. between 50 and 110), and little by little recovers not only his health but his faith in his fellow man.

The town is populated by Colorful Characters, but Ms. Flagg doesn't get absolutely goofy with them, as some authors do. It's a sweet, optimistic story, but she keeps enough suspense and tension to make it feel less than completely predictable. I enjoyed visiting Lost River and spending time with its inhabitants, and I found myself wishing that I could stay longer.

This charming tale is a delight from beginning to end. A lonely man is told by his doctor to get his affairs in order, and that maybe a change in climate could add some months to his life. Leaving Chicago for a very small town in Alabama, Oswald finds a life he didn’t know existed, in the form of caring people, a loving but abandoned child, and a mysterious redbird. A heart-warming tale, it has all the elements needed – including a happy ending – for a wonderful Christmas story.

This was a sweet little story set in a tight-knit community in southern Alabama. We first meet Oswald in Chicago, an alcoholic in severely declining health, while at his latest doctors appointment. He's told by his doctor that it would be best to move to a warmer climate as he "won't live through another Chicago winter." Thinking this Christmas will be his last, Oswald settles his affairs and heads south to Lost River, Alabama.

The humor in this book was great! The story has genuine warmth and characters that constantly made me smile. I really enjoyed watching Oswald's transformation and adored his relationship with Patsy. I didn't expect to get choked up during this book, but alas...I shed a tear or two. I couldn't help myself. It was the bird...doggone it... Kids and animals get me every time.

Very nicely written and a quick read that includes a Christmas miracle to lift your spirits! I'm looking forward to reading more of Ms. Flagg's work.

This is a simplistic cliche-ridden story about an alcoholic who goes to a fictional town in Baldwin County, Alabama, and is welcomed with open arms, all the people in the town like him, and he comes to know a crippled girl who likes a crippled redbird. There is ahappy ending and lots of unlikely happenings.

Adult orphan Oswald T. Campbell believes he has less than a year to live, so he moves from Chicago to rural Alabama to live out his final days. The charmingly eccentric residents of the small town he lands in help him regain his health and overcome his loneliness. A complication arises in the form of an abandoned little girl who needs surgery, but all ends happily ever after. I read this predictable but pleasant book in a day. It's a feel-good story of redemption, healing, and even a Christmas miracle or two.

I had read this book some years ago, and when I saw this volume in a used bookstore, recalled it as an enjoyable read so I picked it up to re-read. It was, after all, Christmas time and it was in the Christmas books section. In spite of its' title, it really is not a Christmas book -- there is a kind of Christmas miracle at the end, though. It has a big-city man moving to a small-town in Alabama and meeting all these small-town, cozy characters. It's a bit longer than a novella-length and I enjoyed it just as much the second time around.

This is a story of a man Oswald who is dying of emphysema. His doctor tells him he has very little time left and he needs to move to a warm climate so he moves to Lost River, Alabama. Once there he meets a cast of characters. Roy who owns th local grocery store. Roy has a prt red bird named Jack. Patsy is a little girl who visits Jack every day. She is deformed, her leg turns out and drags when she walks. Patsy lives with Francis. Patsy's aunt dumped her on Francis because she no longer wanted to care for her anymore. This is the story of how each of these lives change the others. It was heartwarming. A real pick me up. People doing good for each other. I really enjoyed the book.

Book on CD read by the author

This is a charming story set in a small town of Lost River, Alabama. On the advice of his doctor, Oswald Campbell leaves snowy Chicago to rest his lungs in the milder climate of Southern Alabama. He’s not sure what he was expecting, but it wasn’t a tiny town of just over 100 residents, all of whom seem to already know him before he even arrives. Slowly he becomes friends with the residents of the community, and especially with one little girl – an orphan like himself. The story is filled with colorful characters, small-town charm, and possibly a miracle. A nice, light read for this time of year.

Flagg is a talented actress and she does a credible job of reading the novel, though I find her pace just a tad slow. Also, she doesn’t have enough range to sufficiently differentiate all the female characters. But those are really small quibbles.

    A Little Fluff for Christmas

Read this one for the bookclub. It's the story of a loner who relocates from Chicago to Alabama to try to eke out a few more years of life, and the town that takes him in with open arms. Not really my cup of tea, but well written. Not as deep as her other novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe, which I liked very much.
