- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is a great series about Miss Julia, a southern lady who finds out after her husband's death that he had a long-time mistress and a son by her. Miss Julia takes in Hazel Marie and Little Lloyd, finding a kindred spirit in the young boy and winding up loving him as much as she would have her own child.Miss Julia was always very prim and proper. But since her life changed, she has become more daring, more willing to put herself out for people and causes near to her heart. In Miss Julia Paints the Town, she takes on an evil developer who wants to tear down the old courthouse in Abbottsville and put up a high-rise condo. Determined to discourage him, she trots him around, introducing to the town's most eccentric citizens.Miss Julia also takes to advising four women in town who are having trouble with their husbands. Three of the husbands have disappeared and one of the wives has decided to stop being the submissive wife her husband has grown accustomed to dealing with. When the local Presbyterian minister minister hears of Miss Julia's advice, he calls her on the carpet. Little does he know that one of Miss Julia's advisees is the reverend's own wife -- who has tired of being submissive. I would classify the later books in this series as "capers," Lucy-and-Ethel-type capers. They're light and easy reads, but not as meaty as the earlier books. I have turned on many friends to this series and not one has been anything but charmed by it.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/52.5 stars.I love Miss Julia and I read the books mostly for her, and the other characters. But Ross is stretching her plot too thin, and this one just misses the mark. Either the missing investor or the slimy developer would have been enough. Trying to do both did a disservice to both, to Miss Julia, and to her readers.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I'm still enjoying Miss Julia and her cast of wacky friends, close family and sideline adversaries! This book deals with shading property dealing, an historical courthouse along with its even more historical statue and the strange disappearance of three husbands of close friends of Miss Julia. The scene at the top of the courthouse has to be read to be believed, I was laughing out loud as I read along.
I'll keep reading as long as there are books to be read in this series. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great listen! Wonderful book to listen to!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Miss Julia is delightful as usual! I thought her first experience driving a car in Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind was funny, but she literally tops that escapade here. She's out to save the courthouse from condominium blight and nothing is going to get in her way - not even a developer villain and the town council. Just plain fun.
