I know these books don't all end with a happy ending and the characters aren't perfect people, but I was not particularly thrilled with the dramatic content in this one.

Another solid Joe Pickett novel. I wish Recorded Books would have done a better job with their editing. I have listened to all of the Joe Pickett books they have done to this point, and at the end of each chapter there are a few extra seconds where you can hear the narrator turn the page and take a breath. He is a great narrator for the series, it was just the editing. I hope the other books are edited better.

Good book, but I felt like the story was just getting going for about the first half. Not necessarily slow, but just a lot of leading up to a rapid conclusion.

The recording has an unusual “breath” taken at the end of each chapter, as if the reader is about to start reading.

I love all of CJ Box’s books. The previous ones, however, had such descriptive language about the kills of animals. This one didn’t do that. So I really REALLY like this book!! He develops his characters, and just keeps them on new adventures. I never know the twists and turns the plot will take. He does keep me guessing! So happy I didn’t give up. The others were really old as well, but made me really sad when the animals were killed so cruelly.

I enjoy this series but don't love it. Though that may be as much cos I am reading them on my Kindle and I never quite get so involved in a book when I do that. This was enjoyable enough.

I love the character of Joe Pickett so, so much but there are a couple of things in this one that annoyed me.1. The setting. Joe knows his own territory like the back of his hand. He's responsible for the section of Wyoming that contains the small town of Saddlestring, where he calls home, and lots of remote backcountry. When Joe relocates to the busier Jackson, he notices that Jackson is full of ultra-wealthy people, and the town has become far more "hippy" than he is used to. The mystery in this book involves the suicide death of the previous game warden-Joe doesn't believe that Will Jensen would take his own life, so what really happened and why does it look like he did? As he begins to uncover the truth about Will's death, Joe is faced with political and environmental issues that have the potential to disturb the local wildlife. He also comes across some unusual local activist activity and becomes caught up with the followers of the good meat movement. Joe thinks both of these things are strange.2. The relationship between Joe and his wife, Marybeth. I don't like Marybeth under the best of circumstances. I think she's prickly and sometimes a little cold, where Joe really deserves better for how hard he works and how he loves his family. But an extended time spent away from one another puts more strain on their already-sometimes-stressful marriage, and I don't like some of the decisions Marybeth and Joe made. No spoilers, but I wanted to yell at both of them multiple times. I can't believe they didn't work harder to stay connected while they were separated by Joe's job. I'm also perplexed at most of Joe's daughter Sheridan's behavior throughout the entire story, and Marybeth's inability to seem to be able to handle her young daughter. As usual, the mystery was good, and there were plenty of moving parts that kept me glued to the pages. But I just didn't feel swept away by the nature and the terrain like I normally do when Joe patrols the Big Horn Mountains, and I absolutely hated the tension between Joe and Marybeth.Even so, Joe is GOOD and his goodness is what makes him interesting. Though flawed, he is one of the most honest ones in law enforcement. This wasn't my favorite of the series, but I'm sticking around for more and I hope things move a little closer to normal with Joe in the next book. Also, I'm following Joe's 13-year-old daughter Sheridan closely, as well as his friendship with falconer Nate Romanowski.Audiobook Notes: This may be my very favorite audiobook series and it all comes down to the way that David Chandler narrates these characters. He has the perfect voices for Joe Pickett and Nate Romanowski. This audiobook series has my very highest recommendation.However...the chapters that are listed in the audiobook do not match the actual chapters of the book. So Chapter One of the audiobook had multiple chapters in it, for example. When I wanted to read some of the book in print and then pick back up with the audiobook later, I had to search for my place in the audio and I don't like that. The previous books in this series haven't been like that, and I'm hoping they go back to the audio chapters matching the actual chapters with the next installment.Title: Out of Range by C.J. I didn't care for this one as much as the prior entries in this series, in part because, both of the plotlines felt a little unfinished. I don't think they needed much added to them but both could have benefited from about 10 more pages a piece to flesh out the details and build to a more satisfying conclusion. That said, I did like the ground work this book laid for potentially exploring the impacts long hours and low pay can have on a marriage in future installments.

I liked that it took place in Jackson Hole.

Joe Pickett is temporarily stationed in Jackson Hole, replacing one of his buddies who's just died of apparent suicide. The plot thickens. Theme wise, C.J. Box wants the reader to acknowledge the conflicts between the greedy developer and the tree hugger. This includes the depths to which the developer will go for profit. Additionally, one of the bad guys is a long-time outfitter whose livelihood is challenged. Joe also has communication problems with his wife Mary Beth, who deals with her own challenges in dad;s absence. The book is rife with themes and lessons; one just has to begin.

Joe Pickett may have bitten off more than he can handle in this novel! He is temporarily stationed in Jackson Hole, the swankiest of swanky location for a game warden. One of his best friends has died and it is his place that Joe is taking.Immediately the situation turns odd. Joe feels weird, people don't like him (putting it mildly!), he thinks his friend was murdered, not suicidal and the town's main developer's wife has her eye on Joe.Meanwhile, Marybeth and the girls are having issues of their own and it all boils down to who do you trust.

This is the first Joe Pickett novel I have read. Its easy to read ok story about Joe trying to solve the death of the Park ranger he has replaced. But to be honest I found this book rather far fetched and not at all believable. Overall disappointed in this book.

Another very enjoyable story of Joe Pickett, Wyoming Game Warden. This time he's in Jackson where people don't play by the rules and yet again he finds himself in the thick of it making enemies of very important people.

I didn't especially like the first book in the series but decided to give it another chance. This series doesn't work for me, I just don't care enough for the situation of the characters, so I'm letting this author go.

5th in the Joe Pickett series. In this episode, Joe moves out of his home range in the Bighorn mountains to take a temporary assignment in the Grand Tetons district in Jackson, Wyoming, thanks to the death of its ranger, a good friend of Joe’s; the death appears to be a suicide.Jackson is NOT an easy assignment, since multiple interests clash over the use of public lands, a favorite them of Box’s. This time, development is the main issue, and the powerful forces that stand to gain a great deal of money through what they claim is appropriate use of land.Personal danger enters into the mix when Joe is fairly sure that his friend’s death has not been a suicide, but murder. This is probably Box’s best book to date in the series, mainly because he’s not faced with the awkwardness of having Joe act like a normal human being in emotional situations. This time it’s all action, and the book quite frankly is better off for it.Box’s writing continues to improve and his sense of locale is, as usual, superb. Lots of action and a good plot also contribute to an excellent read. Highly recommended.

Winner of the Anthony Award, Prix Calibre 38 (France), the Macavity Award, the Gumshoe Award, the Barry Award, and an Edgar Award and (Whew!) L.A. Times Book Prize Finalist, CJ Box’s newest Joe Pickett mystery hit the New York Times bestseller list. Our Cheyenne, Wyoming author created a character who tries to do the right thing, be a good husband, father and man yielding common sense and his game warden badge. His stories revolve around the life of Joe Pickett, his job and his family, possibly similar to Box’s own experiences traveling, fishing, hiking, working as a ranch hand, a surveyor and a newspaper man. The series starts with Open Season, Savage Run, Winter Kill, Trophy Hunt, Out of Range and his newest award winner: Free Fire. In Free Fire, Joe has been fired from his job as game warden, and the politics are daunting. The Wyoming governor is faced with public critisism with the murders of four campers in Yellowstone by an attorney. Something profitable and dangerous is going on in Yellowstone so the governor offers Joe his badge if he will investigate without credentials.Look for the next Joe Pickett mystery Blue Heaven in 2008.

It comes as a great surpise to Joe PIckett that his old friend Will Jensen is dead, he had committed suicide. Joe is asked to take over Will's district as hunting season is starting. Joe finds himself a target of some murderous events and starts to ask questions about his friend's death. I had a sneaking suspicion what was going on throughout the book but the delivery was interesting and worth the trip but there was little real suspense and while I would read more in the series I'm not rushing out to buy them. Perfect books to borrow from the library
