- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This novel is set in the South after reconstruction. It is a about a girl whose father came from a poor family in the South, but has built up a turpentine farm. Her sister is blind and her mother has an laudanum addiction. After her father dies, the family is left poor, and she goes to a new town to start her own life. I enjoyed the story, but some of the sentences are clunky and are hard to read. Sometimes this got in the way of my enjoyment.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Monroe Miller is a prosperous turpentine farmer in southern Georgia at the beginning of the 20th century. He is respected by everyone but his wife and two daughters, Dalia, and Nellie Ann, and the beloved black servant Katie Mae. Why is one of the big plot points, and I won't spoil the read an tell what it is, but it's a big one. The first half of the book is Monroe's story, and then the second half of the book shifts to Dalia. Lots of interesting time-period detail. The only complaint I have is that there wasn't always a clear explanation for the characters' motivation for doing what they did. Still a good read.
