In addition to her two major studies of Tesla (most recently Tesla: Master of Lightning, with Robert Uth), she has written Midnight at Mabel's, a biography of the great cabaret singer and song stylist Mabel Mercer. Cheney is also the author of Meanwhile Farm and Why: The Serial Killer in America. She lives in California.

      Tesla came up with a few things Like the AC generator, Lights with no wires and perhaps radio before Marconi. Tesla had royalties with Westinghouse on every watt of power generated but sold this right due to pressure from the Westinghouse accountants which Westinghouse himself was a bit reluctant to have him forfeit but he did. Finance troubled him much of his life.

      There is a funny little bit in here with a prank he pulled on Mark Twain when he was over for a visit.

      This book is one of my favorite books. Tesla is such an interesting man and Cheney does a wonderful job at helping her readers understand the many layers of Tesla’s personality and his dedication to his many ideas and inventions. He was a humble, yet complex, man who was more committed to inventions than fame or fortune. His inventions brought us into the 21st Century. What a genius he was. Way ahead of his time. We own a lot to Tesla’s work.

      Tesla by by Margaret Cheney; (4*)Genius is one of those words that gets thrown around a lot & most of the time we are just talking about someone who is a bit smarter than the rest of us. But Nikola Tesla was the real deal. Reading this book helped this reader really understand just how much of a genius Tesla was. From the very beginning he had a grasp on the nature of electricity that no one else alive had; perhaps an even better grasp of this subject than anyone today. Because he could understand its very nature he could apply it in ways that people like Edison, Marconi & Roentgen could only guess at. He took the first step that led to inventions like the wireless telegraph, the X Ray, remote control & he was solely responsible for alternating current and the AC motor which revolutionized industry.Perhaps the one invention of Tesla that has never been completely understood is the Tesla coil. He understood its implications so completely that he was planning on using it for a jumping off point for wireless energy, worldwide communication & even possibly communication to other planets. He had plans for a death ray that would shoot down hundreds of planes from 250 miles away.It sounds like science fiction and his thinking was so far ahead of much of the world that he could often say something in jest & it was believed by the masses. However despite his multitude of inventions & patents he was not a businessman & he ended up dying penniless. This is an interesting story about a very fascinating man. What I find so incredible is just how far ahead of his time he was. Many of his concepts are still being researched and pursued today.

      Tesla: Man Out of Time by Margaret Cheney

      Tesla was a great inventor and great contributor to modern technology. Yet, he has often been forgotten and slipped through the cracks until the last couple decade. And if you're looking for a biography on this great (yet slightly neurotic and crazy) man, this is definitely the biography for you to pick up. It is detailed and is equal in talking about the good and the bad of this man. There are several books about him but from what I can tell, this is the best so far.

      I rated this book 3 stars but felt it deserved more. My lack of more stars is more due to me than the book. I read most this book in a haze. I tried to read it mostly when evacuated and for obvious reasons my brain just didn't comprehend it. There is some technical jargon that is explained for even those with no experience in the world of science but my poor brain was elsewhere. And unfortunately for that reason the poor book suffers because of my inability to concentrate. But regardless, this IS a good book and a lot of good information. Just remember when reading this book that it was written in the 1980s'. So “technology of today and the future” aren't so today and future like. Definitely a must read for fans of Tesla and his work or for those that don't even know who he is!

      PS. Just by chance I finished this book on Tesla's 156th Birthday. This made me happy and was fitting.

      Very good biography of Nikola Tesla, the Serbian-American electrical experimenter and inventor. Tesla was a brilliant genius, whose staggering array of inventions (the most important of which is polyphase alternating current) have caused him to be described as "the man who invented the 20th century". A fascinating character worth knowing.
