About this audiobook
The United States government is given a warning by the preeminent biophysicists in the country: current sterilization procedures applied to returning space probes may be inadequate to guarantee uncontaminated re-entry to the atmosphere.
Two years later, seventeen satellites are sent into the outer fringes of space to "collect organisms and dust for study." One of them falls to earth, landing in a desolate area of Arizona.
Twelve miles from the landing site, in the town of Piedmont, a shocking discovery is made: the streets are littered with the dead bodies of the town's inhabitants, as if they dropped dead in their tracks.
The terror has begun....
Editor's Note
The classic pandemic novel…
What if a killer virus came from outer space? When a scientific satellite designed to collect extraterrestrial samples crashes down to Earth, it releases a deadly microbe, and the body count starts to rise. Michael Crichton’s classic thriller imagines the panic that ensues as a totally unprepared government and scientific community desperately try to stop the spreading alien pandemic.

Reviews for The Andromeda Strain

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Lots of explanation, very little action, and whatever tension build-up there was, was from the exaggerated amount of (unfounded) foreshadowing.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5In my humble opinion, this book was so well written, that had I not perceived some of the time specific statements regarding specifically the time period and no reference to any later dates, I would have thought it to have been recently published. Medically accurate, at leat to a retired, degreed Paramedic of 30 years with initial pre-med education. The human anatomical references, human biology, causality and 2° effect of the various types of acidosis/alkalosis, etc. having been pulled in to the plot made this all the more interesting to me. My having picked it as a title I thought, based on the keyword 'strain' in a post-pandemic world coupled with my career proved to be a great choice. I just wanted something to pass the time while working on household DIY fix it projects; I wasn't disappointed! And a huge shout out to the voice I thought sounded so familiar, 'Brutal' ....of The Green Mile reference....or the Langoliers, or the movie 'The Rock', 'Contact' take your pick - perfect narrating job by Mr. David Morse!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I normally enjoy academically dense science fiction, but I prefer that to be backed up by interesting characters and a compelling tension curve. The Andromeda Strain has a really cool concept, and I appreciate its effort to be scientifically accurate, but it's not exactly a thrilling read.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Wow wee a long time wow wee woo woo ha
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Extremely possible or probable. Something to think about in life.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Nice engaging book. Small enough but the story has some basic twists as expected, a good sci-fi novel. The explanations of the technology might get too much, it is person dependent. Though I knew those technology, I liked the simple words used to describe them.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Perfect narration! I was very impressed. Kept my attention throughout.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The audio narration gets 6/5.
The story was written in 1969. Like other books of that time, descriptions of computers seem off and unrealistic.
But the story gets most of the science correct and plausible to fit in the current era. Crichton had obviously done enough research to make the story seem more like a historical retelling and not science fiction. The story has enough tension so the listener can stay focussed through moments like the narrator reading computer transcripts— something that looked better in print.
I am glad I gave it a listen. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The audio quality and narrator were excellent, but the plot has some holes in it that just can't be overlooked
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very good and still good
Suspense highly recommended reading - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Chilling, even 50 years later. Science keeps proving how little we comprehend .
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wanted to re-read this book before reading the new sequel "The Andromeda Evolution." Read it many years ago and have seen the movie a couple of times. A high tech thriller written in 1969 but not at all out of date. Could easily have been written today.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5An excellent book that kept me engaged all the way through. Highly recommended
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good read of our future problems and now??? Now
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The idea of a virus from out space is very interesting, and I think very well use to tell the story. Some of the ambient is kind of out dated so the novel shows it's aged but nothing that prevents enjoying it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Good book. Good workmanship. Great story. Especially liked the deep dive into 70s biology.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Adequate balance of science and excitement, little short on end
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5too dated, it was hard work.
honestly don't bother with it. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One of the best science-fiction novels ever written, and the story is very telling about what goes on within the "black-world" of government and industry.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Why did I wait so long to enjoy this book!? Actually, listening rather than reading made it even better.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Decent storyline... As a microbiologist, found it interesting, trying to guess ahead. Did not Luke the way it abruptly ended. To see if another chapter...epilogue? If not included, feel that is like leaning out a very important part.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Overall a pretty good book, there is lots of scientific jargon and I am not sure I really understood the end. There was a part in the book which discussed immunities and how mankind has adapted to viruses and bacteria over the years. Frankly, I was hoping this book would validate my opinion that we give our kids and ourselves too many vaccines. Also we are reminded to wash our hands, use anti-bacterial products and of course were forced to wear masks over the last two years. My concern is we are going to raise a generation of humans who will not have any natural immunities to anything. Since this book is science fiction it really can't validate my opinion; however, there was a portion of the book in Chapter 26 which touched on this.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5While it's REALLY heavy on technical explanations, I still found the story enjoyable and was excited to continue uncovering secrets about the mysterious Andromeda Strain. I was, however, disappointed in how anti-climactic the ending was. I think I understand what Crichton was going for, but I was none the less a bit let down.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I LOVE this book! And I live David Morse’s reading of it. I am angry about the way this audiobook ended - it cut off the end of the book and completely cut off the epilogue! Aaaarrrrggg! Very unprofessional, SCRIBD!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A great story, way ahead of its time. A great listen
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Decent narration. The book itself was fairly boring. Not much happened and very dated science.
