About this audiobook
Ivan Goncharov’s masterpiece—a magnificent farce about a gentleman who spends the better part of his life in bed—brilliantly employs humor to explore the absurdities and injustices of an outmoded social order.
The book was considered a satire of Russian nobility whose social and economic function was increasingly questioned in mid-nineteenth century Russia. The novel was popular when it came out, and some of its characters and devices have imprinted on Russian culture and language.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really enjoyed the book even the amateurishness of the reading made me feel like I was being read to. That it didn’t feel like a performance and the confusion of accents, it’s sheer lack of slickness was refreshing because the narrator had heart.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5A tale warning if the dangers of living a dissolute life. Oblonov is slothful to such an extent it hinders his life, threatens to lose him his love and finally damages his health.
