About this audiobook

A Word Award winner.

In 1942, telegrams always bring life-altering and tragic news in a war-hardened world—and the one Maggie Marshall receives is no different. But running a restaurant with the help of only pregnant, unwed girls has taught her to be tough. Maggie’s no weeping widow, but Charlotte Penfield thinks she’s the most unfeeling woman on earth. Seventeen, exiled by her wealthy parents, and working in the restaurant, fanciful Charlotte runs away with romantic notions of a reunion with her baby’s father at his military camp.

It has been years since Maggie darkened the church door of her pastor and childhood friend, Reverend Reuben Fennel, and his heart breaks for the hardened woman Maggie’s become. When she seeks his help to find Charlotte, he’s happy to aid her in the chase—though it may cost him his job and reputation.

Over the miles from Winnipeg to Fort William, Reuben and Maggie’s journey rekindles their affection—and their dreams of what they still could be. But Maggie stubbornly clings to her independent ways until she’s dealt another devastating loss, one that forces her to recognize that heroes can be discovered in unlikely places and love may be far sweeter than she ever dared imagine.

I enjoyed this WWII story and its location in Canada, and learning a bit about what life was like then and there! I also loved coming across characters from previously written novels, and was moved by the main message
    - understanding one's worth from a perspective wholly separate from the lies told one thus far in life. Finding worth simply as a beloved son or daughter of God, in spite of life altering mistakes or choices, impacts each of the main characters, giving them the confidence to help others and to do a lot of crucial healing themselves.

Truths well illustrated by this sweet tale!

I think I'd suggest reading this one, instead of listening to the audio version, IF you're picky about narration and character voices. While inflection was wonderful, a male speaking female parts has a difficult chore ahead of him, and those parts seemed a little forced and were a bit distracting at times. I'm picky though! You may not think twice.

I was born in 1942 and really enjoyed reading about that time period. Great story.

Compelling plot, but heavy Christian content blurs the character development and is the element that seems more by rote, lacking originality. Furthermore, some details were missed by the writer that meticulous readers will find annoying. Nevertheless, unexpected turns in the story line leave most of these flaws forgiven by the end as it takes you to unexpected events but still wraps up nicely like a Hallmark card. Kudos to the writer for the intentional feminist undertones even though its set in a clearly patriarchal 1940’s era.

What a beautiful reminder of the effects of war on the home front.
