About this audiobook
Based on the true story of a forgotten hero, the USA Today and #1 Amazon Charts bestseller Beneath a Scarlet Sky is the triumphant, epic tale of one young man’s incredible courage and resilience during one of history’s darkest hours.
Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He’s a normal Italian teenager—obsessed with music, food, and girls—but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior.
In an attempt to protect him, Pino’s parents force him to enlist as a German soldier—a move they think will keep him out of combat. But after Pino is injured, he is recruited at the tender age of eighteen to become the personal driver for Adolf Hitler’s left hand in Italy, General Hans Leyers, one of the Third Reich’s most mysterious and powerful commanders.
Now, with the opportunity to spy for the Allies inside the German High Command, Pino endures the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation by fighting in secret, his courage bolstered by his love for Anna and for the life he dreams they will one day share.
Fans of All the Light We Cannot See, The Nightingale, and Unbroken will enjoy this riveting saga of history, suspense, and love.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5THIS BOOK IS NOT HISTORICALLY ACCURATE (even for things you might glean from Wikipedia; e.g., Mussolini spoke German, Leyers was not the most powerful Nazi in Italy by a long shot, etc.). Factually questionable (or flat out wrong) from beginning to end, sophomoric prose and painfully awful dialogue, and the “hero” is a sort of Forrest Gump of the last days of WWII in Milan. Listen to All the Light We Cannot See instead.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I truly would be up half the night listening. I did audio and loved it. It was a thriller. I liked the history and the fact that much of it was true. Our book club is reading it for February read. I have also read The Last Green Valley.
It was a super read also. Mr. Sullivan’s books are great. I’m spreading the word and encouraging others to read his books. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Truly an epic story! The incredible courage and character of a man through such a difficult time in the world is a true inspiration. Moving, riveting and beautiful, a must read or listen.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One of the best audiobooks I've ever heard. Intriguing the whole way through, and better yet because it's based on a true life story. Just amazing, and very well narrated.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a very interesting book and well read. I enjoyed listening to it each day on my commute. I enjoyed the telling of a person's life and this does a really good job. I would recommend this book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Must read simply for the fascinating story of Milan, Italy during WWII. The author makes it clear this is a fictional novel based on a true story. I never really knew the Italian side of WWII since so much has been focused on Germany, France, England, and Japan and I am glad I read the novel. The dialogue, plot, and characters could be better realized.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5An interesting insight into the history of the latter part of WW2 in northern Italy and the key players. Some of the dialogues and the monologues on life, faith and love are a bit excruciating, particularly in the first third of the book, but otherwise the story moves along at a good steady pace.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Riveting. I could not put it down. I Loved it
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Best book I have read in a long time. Ten out of ten
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Amazing Story. Wonderful narration. Too much repetitive Anna love story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a moving and well told WWII story. Incredibly written. It’s so interesting to hear about the war from a different perspective- from inside Italy. Incredible read. Highly recommend. A new addition to my list of all time favorite books!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I listen to a lot of books! This is the best book I’ve ever heard and it’s a true story. Mark Sullivan is an absolutely incredible story teller and you won’t be able to put it down. Do your errands, laundry, dishes or whatever before you start! HA! Don’t say you weren’t warned!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Fantastic book that captures the hearts of young believers and older men's faith. Just an amazing journey of a teenager in war - in such a short 2yrs time. I'm not sure there are even a few who had/have the faith and courage of this young man who made others hearts smile while witnessing such horror.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Beautiful story. Tragic with love and the endurance of one boy who became a man while saving the lives of Italian Jews.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book was amazing and I didn't want it to end. Pino Lella will always have a place in my heart after hearing his story. So touching.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Loved the book and story, however the narration wasn’t my taste. Usually a narrator can make or break a book for me but this story was so interesting I was able to ignore some of the annoying parts of the audio book! Definitely worth the read. Just know this is an emotionally and mentally taxing story, it will leave you sad most times, but in a good way!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5While I became weary of such atrocious, heinous crimes against fellow human beings, the sheer reality of history captivated my attention. Non belief leads to evil! My faith is stronger after listening.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing research & very very well read! Thanks to all! Your brought the story to life at every turn of the page!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow. Intense. Impacting. A little long but love the historical facts. Never a dull moment.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Such a beautiful and tragic story. Beautifully written. So wonderful that the story of such a great young soul was finally written. Gives hope to go on amidst life's tragedies.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Great story, not well written. I think the word “evaporated” was used in reference to someone’s facial expression changing three or four times within the first hour. I tried to stop listening then, but was invested in the story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Well written story, even if brutal in places, but that is history.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Incredible life and loss. So glad to know his story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What an incredible story, beautifully written and engaging from beginning to the end.
You cannot go past this book. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was hard to put down and I finished it quickly. A different perspective on WWII than many other boos I’ve read as it focused on the war in northern Italy.
