About this audiobook

An instant New York Times bestseller!

“Will keep you guessing until the last page.” —Cinda Williams Chima, New York Times bestselling author

A girl travels back in time to find a mysterious book that could save her future in Lisa Maxwell’s “splendid series opener” (Kirkus Reviews).

Stop the Magician.
Steal the book.
Save the future.

In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she's been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

Very good book, but it has an odd narration style.

I could not get further than 6th chapter as I couldn't stand the narration style. Maybe one day, when I have more time, I will read it... Sorry for the bad review just becauae of the narration.

Giving 4 stars because of the action, the plot twists and the 1902 NYC setting. The villain(s) were great. Dolph gave me great vibes and Esta had an okay attitude. For some reason Viola stood out to me the most and Nibs ended up gaining my heart (lol at the outfit scene, he grew a lot). Saying there is a “love story” is too much. I’m not sure if Esta likes him that way. That is totally fine by me, girl had her Priorities straight and I LOVE that in a character.

I loved the book. Would definitely recommend giving this a go if you like fantasy.
I would not recommend the audio though, as I had enough 8 chapters inn and switched to normal. Her tone kept going up in places, indicating something highly suspenseful was about to happen, while it were only people putting on coats or whatever. EVERY FEW SENTENCES! clear to say, this bugged me a lot and I couldn't for the life of me focus on the story itself.

This is exactly the fresh and unique read I've been looking for! I'm an avid reader, 2-4 books a week, and I've been struggling to find something to hold my interest lately, this did the trick! I highly recommend!

Slow burn but it is necessary so that the world building and characterization makes sense. Fantastic writing.

I was lost for the first few chapters, but after I got the hang of the world building it started to flow

This is not the "Six of Crows" feeling you are looking for!! It has everything I wanted, yet 30 chapters in and I'm still waiting for the story to start. The characters appear to have no real connection or affection for each other, so why should I care about them? Everyone seems to just tolerate each other, no sense of "gang" or "team". The magical world/rules are not well fleshed out and leave me confused. Giving up 5 hrs into the audiobook, considering it a win with 10 hours left to go. Read (re-read) "Six of Crows"/Bardugo instead of this meandering book.

I can't stand the narrators voice and style of narration. I find it aggravating, she puts me on edge. Not able to listen anymore and I'm only at chapter 4.
This is the SECOND time I've tried to listen and I just can't do it. It's looks like an awesome read from the other reviews. The narrator spoiled it for me. Just a shame.

Reminds me a lot of the discovery of witches in the history and finding a rumored 'magical' book. Got to say though that it doesn't equate in mystery and adventure. Still, it was a fun easy read
