Digital audiobook read by the authorSUBTITLE: Smart Things I Learned Doing Stupid StuffI’m a great fan of the HGTV show Fixer Upper. This is Chip Gaines telling the story of how he and his wife Joanna came to be the successful entrepreneurs that they are today. One thing that has struck me in the TV show is how immaturely Chip behaves at times. And this book is FULL of his immaturity. I don’t find his antics, his teasing, his eating bugs, or many of the other stunts he pulls funny. I find them irritating. Take a look at that subtitle one more time; what I’m going to remember about this book will be the “doing stupid stuff.”On the other hand, his sincere belief in “Go for it,” in taking life by the horns and going all out clearly comes through. I think he’d probably do well on the motivational speaking circuit. Chip narrates the book himself. I can’t imagine anyone else doing a better job. Although, his Spanish pronunciation is dreadful! The “afterword” includes a couple of “testimonials” from employees, and they each read their own words, as well. If anything, especially in Elizabeth’s story, Gaines comes across as even more immature, but clearly his employees – at least these – love him.

Chip Gaines has a conversational and casual writing style. He writes to the reader, rather than at and its hard to dislike him (or via him, Jo). He shares his love of family in a warm and personal way, without it feeling he's selling their personal lives out. While he seems naturally outgoing, that balancing act of drawing the reader in while not over-revealing is a fairly shrewd skill. Not the bad kind of shrewd... the Gaines are the type of people I'd want to count among friends irl. The book is written as an extended version of a motivational speech, with personal anecdotes strung together that don't always lead to a clear application for the reader. It's more like his own processing of life kessons learned through anecdotes from childhood to present. He is a natural encourager, leader and positive influence. That's both clear and admirable. Through this book, you come to understand what Chip values most: hard work, resourcefulness, God, Jo and his family. It's hard to dislike the Gaines who genuinely seem like decent, ordinary people who are living in extraordinary circumstances. Though not a relationship advice book per se, they exhibit a strong marriage, friendship and partnership at the core and that respect for each other. Chip's notes from his former personal assistants are intriguing. He's had quite a few by his own account, though not everyone provided an account or was included. Presumably, he and his editor would only let mostly positive things through and this seems to be the case here. The first is the most interesting. She seems to be genuinely appreciative and fond of Chip and the opportunities he gives her, but tells a couple of anecdotes about things Chip had her do, without guidance, which scare her because they're high stakes and she's new and needs the job. The tasks nvolve a lot of money (get me a loan and a houseboat) , and she knows "he won't take no for an answer." While she gives him credit for helping her feel she can do anything clearly, the Gaines have been are unaccustomed to being told no and expect to get what they want. As the Gaines' platform increases in size with their TV show, I can't help but wonder just how crafted and tightly managed the Gaines brand is, how much celebrity status has changed them individually and as parents, and how they feel about that. Though in many ways it's a huge, life changing blessing for their families and community, reading between the lines, their fame also may carry a price.

I stuck with it for four chapters, but just couldn’t invest any more into this book. It’s filled with stories, which I like, but they keep coming and coming with no real point other than materialism and self-worth.

OK, I admit that I am a big fan of the Gaines’ HGTV television show and was curious about this book and how it would translate vis-à-vis what we see and hear on the show. There is no doubt that Chip Gaines is passionate about his life and his endeavors. His determination, belief in God and dedication to family comes through loud and strong. I understood all that before I turned a page in the book. While the book added some insight to his various enterprises it was more of an outline of his life to date. The book tended to float all over the place and lacked in detail, but I think that is probably consistent with his personality. It came across more as an inspirational lecture and if that was the purpose he knocked it out of the park. Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Publisher for an advance copy.
