About this audiobook
Acclaimed epic fantasy author John Gwynne with the first book of a new trilogy.
The Ben-Elim, a race of warrior angels, once vanquished a mighty demon horde. Now they rule the Banished lands. But their dominion is brutally enforced and their ancient enemy may not be as crushed as they thought.
In the snowbound north, Drem, a trapper, finds mutilated corpses in the forests – a sign of demonic black magic.
In the south, Riv, a young, tempestuous soldier, discovers a deadly rift within the Ben-Elim themselves.
Two individuals with two world-changing secrets. But where will they lead? And what role will Drem and Riv play in the Banished Land's fate? Difficult choices need to be made.
In the shadows, dark forces are gathering, waiting for their time to rise. . .

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Solid fantasy, good writing. Great world-building. I prefer fewer point of views, but they did (somewhat) tie together by the end. For some reason this lacked emotional impact, for me, and I kinda had a hunch early on of the deaths that were going to hit hard, and maybe because of that, didn't. One of the reveals at the end was way over the top, too, which took the rating down from a high four to a low four stars. Still, a solid start to a series that I'm sure I'll end up continuing with some day.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Just can't get enough of this author/series. Set one hundred years on from the original four book epic, with a mainly new cast of heroes and villains, this book nevertheless captures the essence of the original tale I found so compelling. Without doubt the new master of fantasy for me, it seems Mr Gwynne can do no wrong in my eyes and each book he pens will be top of my to read list if he continues in this vein.
Awesome. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I read this over the weekend and honestly it didn't really make much of an impression on me.
