About this audiobook
In this sequel to the enormously popular and entertaining The Monkey Wrench Gang, Hayduke teams up with his old pals Doc Sarvis, Seldom Seen Smith, and Bonnie Abbzug in a battle against the world's biggest earth-moving machine. Fundamentalist preacher Dudley Love, the mastermind behind "G O L I A T H," wants to turn the Grand Canyon into a uranium mine, but not if eco-warrior Hayduke and his group of committed environmentalist friends have anything to say about it.
Hayduke Lives! is full of noisy politics and seemingly improbable situations (yet all too real) that showcase Abbey's energetic prose and his infectious comic genius as a writer.
Edward Abbey
Edward Abbey (1927-1989) was born in Home, Pennsylvania. He received graduate and postgraduate degrees from the University of New Mexico, and attended the University of Edinburgh. He worked for a time as a forest ranger and was a committed naturalist and a fierce environmentalist; such was his anger, eloquence, and action on the subject that he has become a heroic, almost mythic figure to a whole host of environmental groups and literally millions of readers. Abbey's career as a writer spanned four decades and encompassed a variety of genres, from essays to novels. One of his early successes was the novel The Brave Cowboy, which was made into the movie Lonely Are the Brave. His 1968 collection of essays, Desert Solitaire, became a necessary text for the new environmentalists, like the group 'Earth First,' and his rambunctious 1975 novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, a picaresque tale of environmental guerillas, which launched a national cult movement and sold over half-a-million copies. Other titles include The Journey Home, Fool's Progress, and the posthumously released Hayduke Lives!

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Much like "Desert Solitare", there are parts of this that seem to drag and go on tangents that don't contribute much to the story. But its still a good story with a great ending.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not Abbey's finest novel but his last and the only one I hadn't read. Of course he zings everyone in sight.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Very poor follow-up to the Monkey Wrench Gang. The characters have all changed and gone down less interesting, less noble, and less effective paths. The story line itself is fractured and verging on the pointless- seemingly more a smashed together collection of scenes in environmental activism that Abbey had witnessed over the years rather than any coherent plot. If you enjoyed Monkey Wrench, you may not want to bother with Hayduke...
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A disappointing follow-up to Abbey's classic Monkeywrench Gang follows the same characters through new adventures, but the familiar characters aren't as well fleshed out, and aren't nearly as appealing as in the first book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A great sequel to a great book. The Monkeywrench Gang, well 3 out of 4 of them anyway, attempt to settle down and use more traditional ways of fighting for the land they love. We find Seldom Scene Smith at environmental hearings about uranium mining and exploitation of American land by foreign companies. Doc Sarvis is working at the local childrens clinic dealing with the (coincidentally?) high number of cancer and leukemia cases near the uranium mines and downwind from the nuclear test sites in Nevada. Bonnie has settled down as Doc’s wife and is trying to be a good mother. Hayduke is presumed dead even with the continued monkeywrenching attributed to the Earth First!’ers and other “radicals”. Abbey’s protagonists come out of retirement and probation to take on the GOLIATH, the largest earthmover ever built, as it marches up the canyonlands to stripmine one of their beloved canyons.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Edward Abbey is a personal hero and this book is quite fun. Abbey creates heroes out of unlikely folks and they are broken messed up people that do messed up stuff. Hayduke is just about my least favorite type of person, however, he can bring people to do things they wouldnt do in and of themselves. This book pales in comparison to The Monkey Wrench Gang, that said, it is quite fun. Its much more fulfilling than the Robert Ludlum or Agatha Christie which fall in the "fun read" category. So I recommend it in that vein.
