Sophie Menzies once lived in luxury. Her father's loyalty to the British Crown and the American Revolution changed that. After her mother's death and her father's return to Britain, Sophie is left to occupy her home, Three Chimneys, while she waits for her brother's return from the war. As a social outcast and nearly destitute, Sophie finds that although the fighting is past, in many ways, the war carries on. When her neighbor, General Seamus Ogilvy, returns, Sophie's relationship with the general's daughter brings her frequently into contact with the decorated war hero. As Sophie faces the loss of her home, Seamus proposes a sensible marriage arrangement that will provide for Sophie's financial needs and his daughter's care. Sophie agrees and finds that her heart begins to long for a deeper relationship with Seamus. However, a woman from Seamus' past appears and Sophie's hope seems lost. Will this relationship survive or is Sophie's future bleak? Read more in The Mistress of Tall Acre by Laura Frantz. The Mistress of Tall Acre by Laura Frantz held my attention from beginning to end. Extra twists in the plot provided suspense and depth to create more than the standard marriage-of-convenience story. The relationship between Sophie and Seamus took time to develop, creating a strong foundation for their marriage and sense of expectancy for the reader. I found myself looking forward to my daily reading time and daydreaming about how the rest of the story would go.As always, it's easy to recommend Frantz's work. I love reading about the time period of the American Revolution especially since not as many write about it. This one is so well done. It takes place after the war is over and has many twists and turns in the romance and a little bit of intrigue. It is very hard to put down and I did not want to. I loved the characters of Sophie, Seamus and his daughter, Lily Cate. This story makes you laugh and cry. I received a copy of this book from Revell reads for a fair and honest opinion.

Sophie realizes that she will have to take a chance when the war is over by marrying her neighbor. She doesn't have a lot and General Seamus Ogilvy needs someone to help out at his plantation. She becomes the mistress of the plantation and helps to raise his daughter. All seems to be coming together when a woman from the General's past comes back into his life. Sophie has to learn who and how to trust to make it all work out. I enjoy historical books and learning how the people of the time period acted and what it was like living after the Civil War. I liked learning of the duties of a plantation mistress and liked seeing how Sophie was able to make things turn out for the best. I received this book free from the publisher to review. A Treasure to Have and to Hold..Laura Frantz never disappoints! The book,The Mistress of Tall Acres, is finished, but I am unwilling to leave the world she has so well re-created. It is a world of war, suspicions, Tory vs. Patriot sympathies that can make or break a family reputation. Laura Frantz ties into that well-drawn, taut world intrigue between family members, slaves vs. their owners, and neighbor vs. neighbor. This is certainly a wilderness Cinderella rags-to-riches story, but the happily ever after is in great jeopardy when a woman from General Seamus Olgivey's past appears out of the blue. What will happen to the tenuous future Seamus and Sophie are trying to build together?Realistic, lovable, but uncertain characters, great historical settings and love stories that cannot be forgotten easily make Laura Frantz one of my all-time favorite authors. I may have finished the book yesterday, but I could reread it today and enjoy it no less. Few books have that kind of pull in my reading world. Truly a treasure to have and to hold!!

Good story plot, likeable characters, but WAY TOO LONG!!! I even increased the rate of speech just to speed the story up and I rarely do that.

From the first to the last page I was captivated by this great read, a page-turner for sure. Most of what happens in this story I never saw coming, except who won the War.While her heart lays with the Patriots, her fathers leaving for England makes her be suspected of being a traitor, a Tory. Nothing could be further from the truth, but her lands are about to be confiscated and then where will Sophie Menzies go?Her neighbor next door at Tall Acre Estate is a returning General Seamus Ogilvy, whom is the father of a precocious five-year-old Lily Cate. This beautiful child also steals the heart of Sophie, and they form a bond. Can this also lead to a relationship between Sophie and the General? You don't want to miss the quick historical read, come travel back to the late 1700s you might not want to leave.I received this book through Revell Book Blogger’s Tour, and was not required to give a positive review.

Tuesday, September 22, 2015The Mistress of Tall Acre by Laura Frantz, © 2015I love all of Laura Franz's adventures! Her newest? Now living in a log cabin in Kentucky with a gorgeous view and a contemplative porch swing muse!I have always wondered how many people came to the Americas unwillingly ~ dispelled from their home country. After the colonial war, that might explain why some still stayed with the British when they were on their new soil ~ or... being used to being taken care of, instead of venturing out on their own to a barren land they would have to turn over the soil and begin anew. Others coming for a promise of tranquility and prosperity to send to their loved ones at home until they could afford passage for them.Sophie Menzies is waiting for her brother to come home, returning from the ravages of war. But... letters have been far behind them. Where is he? Without a male heir, her residence could be a thing of the past going on to a near kin. No matter that she has secured a livelihood with continued daybreak to dusk at Tall Acre's neighboring Three Chimneys. The American Revolution left many adrift well after the last cannon sound dispensed and they "all went home."General Seamus Ogilvy, widowed, has returned to Tall Acre with his young daughter, Lily Cate. Trying to establish a new routine for both of them, Seamus above all hopes Lily Cate will learn to care for him. Separated from each other while he was away has brought uncertainty, especially when her grandparents chose to keep them apart in reflections so she did not know him favorably from reference. He also has a war wound that has kept him from his usual chores. His overseer, Mr. Riggs, has been a fine estate manager, keeping Tall Acre from being adrift. The spinning room has been kept active, keeping things in movement, removed from despair from without. The last time Sophie had seen Lily Cate was on her birthing day. Sophie's mother attended the birth with Sophie learning her skills in keeping calm and alert. It was necessary to call in the doctor to aid on this day; all was not well and it was advised from the weakness of the mother, that she not conceive again. Making acquaintance with Lily Cate again has bonded them richly, a part missing with Sophie, an attachment not available due to her spinster state. With war, no suitors have come calling and she longs to share with another.Living each day as we would like it to be, we do not take into account the dealings of others, nor their intent. Sadness and inevitable hardship surface as a web is untangled, those closest to it, enwoven. Unraveling, truth emerges at the pinnacle of hope.Laura Frantz's writings are rich with appeal ~ the uncertainty of what life will bring and how the characters will respond ~ frightful, or certain that the Lord will give them grace and a way to continue.***Thank you to Revell Reads for this review copy of Laura Frantz's The Mistress of Tall Acre. Title: The Mistress of Tall AcreAuthor: Laura FrantzPages: 400Year: 2015Publisher: RevellThis story begins during the Revolutionary War. Seamus Ogilvy is a general under George Washington’s command. He gives eight years of his life to the war, and when he returns home, he find he must take his young daughter, Lily Cate, from unwilling relatives in the middle of the night to bring her home. During the war, his wife dies and is buried in Williamsburg not their home of Tall Acre. His wife was unhappy with him being gone so long and with country life so had moved to Williamsburg to live with her sister. Upon the war’s end, Seamus is faced with a mountain of work at Tall Acre that in eight years of absence has accumulated. He is also facing a potential custody battle from his wife’s sister who wants his daughter for her own. If he were to marry, which he has absolutely no desire to do, he could show that his daughter would grow up with a mother and deflect the lawsuit.Sophie Menzies is a staunch American Patriot despite her Scottish roots and the Tory beliefs of her father, who abandoned her and her mother and brother. Sophie is now living alone at the family home next door to Tall Acre. She and her two remaining old servants are barely eating a meal a day. No one will hire Sophie as they attribute her father’s Tory stance to her, even though she proudly proclaims her American beliefs. She meets Lily Cate one day while foraging for nuts to eat. They form a fast friendship and soon Sophie loves Lily Cate like a daughter. Sophie soon discovers her home has been given to an American as a spoil of war since it belonged to her Tory father. With no home, no job and no food, Sophie prays for a solution to her problems. There is just something about this author’s writing that draws me in from page one, gets my mind and heart engaged to keep me reading steadfastly until the wonderful ending of the story. Every book I’ve read by Laura Frantz is one I would recommend. The romance between Seamus and Sophie is so engaging! The faith of Sophie in this story is amazing. Her faith reignites the lagging faith of Seamus, spurring him on to trust God beyond what was thought to be endurable. The writing is great, and I was sorry the story ended. There is also a wonderful plot twist that I didn’t see coming that just made the story so much more satisfying at its end! I hope to have some time to read some of Laura’s other books I’ve not had a chance to read before. Please don’t miss this one!My rating is 5 stars.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. This is a “stay up all night, can’t put it down, oh no it’s 3 a.m.,” novel! With the help of Ms. Frantz, I stepped back into the time after the American Revolution. As with the end of any war, there is confusion, upheaval, missing loved ones and division. Political allegiances were not as simple today with simply a cutting remark on Facebook. Those who supported the Tories and their extended families were viewed as traitors and endanger for the lives and properties. Such was the position of Sophie. Her Tory father had fled to Scotland and she awaited news on whether her soldier brother was dead or alive. Times were hard and worked hard at barely surviving in her family home, Three Chimneys. Adjoining her land was the wealthy estate of Tall Acre. Home to the highly acclaimed war hero and widower, Seamus Ogilvy. His child Lily Cate, wanders onto her land. Hungry for a mother’s love the little girl becomes obsessively attached to Sophie and Sophie to her. Riddled with guilt over his wife’s death while he was at war, Seamus finds his beautiful neighbor a welcome part of their lives. Here the seeds are planted for the beginning of a beautiful but complicated love story. The author’s skillful and descriptive writing of life during this time, gave me more than an historical view. I believe I could actually draw the pictures in my mind that she painted with words! The story is more than that, much more! Unexpected surprises and turns are so shocking that you might even audibly gasp! All this combined makes for a story you will not forget. I received this book free from Revell Publishing. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I stated are my own. .

The Mistress of Tall Acre by Laura Frantz is a lovely historical Christian romance novel. The Revolutionary War is going on (the year is 1778) when Anne Howard Ogilvy gives birth to Lilas Catherine Ogilvy. General Seanus Ogilvy is Lily Cate’s father (they are going to call her Lily Cate) and he was able to come home for the birth, but he has to return to his duties the next day. General Ogilvy is told by the doctor that his wife cannot go through another birth or she could die. Six years later Sophie Menzies is walking near her home when she encounters Lily Cate. The war is finally over. General Ogilvy and Lily Cate have returned to Tall Acre. Anne passed away during the war according to her sister, Charlotte. Anne went to Wilmington to live towards the end of the war. Sophie has had a hard time during the war because her father, Lord Menzies is a Tory! He created quite a ruckus which made is very difficult for Sophie. Sophie is waiting for her brother to return home. Sophie is glad to see General Ogilvy back home (she has a crush on him). Seamus had to take his daughter from his wife’s relatives during the night (they did not want to give her up). Seamus wants to establish a safe home for his daughter. Sophie has troubles of her own. Three Chimneys (which belonged to her mother) is being confiscated as Tory property. The only solution is for her to marry. Seamus needs a wife and a mother for Lily Cate. The two decide to marry (which makes Lily Cate very happy). Just when things are looking up for the threesome, someone from Seamus’ past returns. I just loved reading The Mistress of Tall Acre. It was a pleasurable novel to read. This is one of those books that you start reading and cannot put down. It is very well-written and one chapter just flowed into the next. The person who returned was expected, but I liked the outcome. There are some great messages in this novel (it is Christian themed). I give The Mistress of Tall Acre 5 out of 5 stars. I look forward to reading more book by Laura Frantz. I received a complimentary copy of The Mistress of Tall Acre from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The review and opinions expressed are my own.
