From the New York Times bestselling author of the National Book Award-winning title The Poet X comes a dazzling novel in prose about a girl with talent, pride, and a drive to feed the soul that keeps her fire burning bright.

Don't miss the audiobook, read by Elizabeth Acevedo, the beloved author and narrator of The Poet X, winner of an Odyssey Honor and an AudioFile Earphones Award winner.

Ever since she got pregnant freshman year, Emoni Santiago’s life has been about making the tough decisions—doing what has to be done for her daughter and her abuela. The one place she can let all that go is in the kitchen, where she adds a little something magical to everything she cooks, turning her food into straight-up goodness.

Even though she dreams of working as a chef after she graduates, Emoni knows that it’s not worth her time to pursue the impossible. Yet despite the rules she thinks she has to play by, once Emoni starts cooking, her only choice is to let her talent break free.

This was the second book I read by this author. I absolutely loved it! Yes, it is a YA book and yes it talks about a teen mother but it also shows a strong willed mother who will go to what ever lengths she needs to go to be able to provide a life for her daughter while following her dreams.

This was one of my favourite reads so far this year! I'm a big fan of Elizabeth Acevedo, from her slam poetry to The Poet X, and now to this gem. I can't wait to read Clap When You Land next. If you have yet to listen to her powerful, poetic words, please do yourself a favour and listen to the audiobooks. Better yet, follow along to the physical book to be fully immersed in the story. I am sure I found a new favourite YA author and wonder what took me so long to read her works. I won't make that mistake again. Happy reading! ?

A rollercoaster of emotions and quick paced journey of self discovery and empowerment for not only the protagonist, Emoni Santiago, but also the people in and around her life. Follow the story of a young girl that becomes a teenage mother her freshman year of high school and overnight must tackle the responsibilities of an adult while dealing with the teenage drama and feelings generally experienced in that frustrating stage of life. With quick wit and heartwarming dialogue, you will walk a mile in Emoni's shoes and eat your way through every snack you have on hand!
