      The best book on the Russian Revolution there is and ever will be. Richard Pipes has written a masterpiece that won’t be eclipsed with this work. It’s the standard.

      Excellent and serene account of the Kadets, the international situation that lead to the saving of the Bolshevik Regime and a classic of Cold War era historiography of Russia from the perspective of one of the most prolific 20th century historians on Russia and its intelligentsia.

      If you are inclined to ask questions on the realpolitik or political catastrophes leading to the Bolshevik dictatorship, Pipes will give you the building blocks to further your understanding of the seminal event of the 20th century.

      Finally finished this one! It was a great read, but I had to knock a star off for sheer length. There was an overwhelming amount of information in here, more even than I expected. I had some questions while reading this about the target audience here, my supposition is Russia experts and scholars. This was certainly not light reading. However, if you are looking for a comprehensive history of the Russian Revolution, this is absolutely the book that I would recommend. I thought that Richard Pipes' coverage of the transformation of old to new Russia was one of the best that I have ever read and very well researched. This book took both a lot of time and a lot of effort to write and it shows in the quality of the finished product. I've already picked up Russia Under the Bolshevik Regime and will keep going with this series on Russian history.

      Methinks he protests too much about how bad the Bolsheviks were. Of course now we know how truly murderous, but comparing them to the Nazis may be going a bit far, with such comments: "Lenin hated what he perceived to be the "bourgeoisie" with a destructive passion that fully equaled Hitler's hatred of the Jews; nothing short of physical annihilation would satisfy him." (pg 728). Also, at some point the chronology becomes unglued with the later chapters reading more like magazine articles than a cohesive chronology, such as "The Murder of the Imperial Family," so you might want to stop reading around Ch. 14. These criticisms aside this is a masterful account.
