Saviano writes with passion and complete commitment about the world-wide cocaine trade. Having put his life on the line by publishing Gomorrah 10 years ago he has to live under police protection, losing all spontaneity, unable to travel or visit any place, a shop, a restaurant … without elaborate security preparations. I never realized how much organized crime centering on the cocaine trade has penetrated and now dominates world economies to the extent that, without the truly enormous sums of ready cash to be laundered, many banks would not survive and the whole international financial sector would be in danger of collapse. Because it is the financial centre of the world he calls London the ‘crime capital’ of the world. Clearly the ‘war’ against the cocaine trade cannot and never will be won. S. states and I agree that legitimizing cocaine is the only solution.
