About this audiobook

Bram Stoker Award Winner for Superior Achievement in a Young Adult Novel

In Adam Cesare’s terrifying young adult debut, Quinn Maybrook finds herself caught in a battle between old and new, tradition and progress—that just may cost her life.

Quinn Maybrook and her father have moved to tiny, boring Kettle Springs, to find a fresh start. But what they don’t know is that ever since the Baypen Corn Syrup Factory shut down, Kettle Springs has cracked in half.

On one side are the adults, who are desperate to make Kettle Springs great again, and on the other are the kids, who want to have fun, make prank videos, and get out of Kettle Springs as quick as they can.

Kettle Springs is caught in a battle between old and new, tradition and progress. It’s a fight that looks like it will destroy the town. Until Frendo, the Baypen mascot, a creepy clown in a pork-pie hat, goes homicidal and decides that the only way for Kettle Springs to grow back is to cull the rotten crop of kids who live there now.

Upon realizing this was a YA horror my first thought was great another “scary” book that doesn’t really do much in the way of horror and focuses on so love story, but oh really Adam Cesare really knows what he is doing. The entire time I felt like I was in a slasher film and once the action gets going it doesn’t stop. If you are looking for a good October read please pick this book up.

I'm currently listening to this and it is not that good. It has a few good parts but it feels like it was drug out when it could have been significantly shorter and been better if it was. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone tbh. And after finishing it it only got worse

The twists were lame, ridiculous, and completely unbelievable, and I rolled my eyes through most of it. Just another YA book trying to make a political statement. But if you can get passed all that and pretend you are watching a B slasher movie, the slasher parts are fun.

The novel centers upon Quinn, a teenage girl who has recently moved to the small factory town of Kettle Springs, Missouri after the tragic death of her mother. Her father has been hired as the new town physician in the hopes that this will allow the two of them to heal. The area has suffered financially since the closing of the Baypen Corn Syrup Factory and its subsequent burning due to arson. As a result the town is at odds with itself and strict lines are drawn between the largely conservative adults and the teens, who are more interested in having fun and drawing views on social media.

Quinn manages to befriend some of the other teens after an incident during her first day in class, after one of the teachers sends them all to study hall. She is invited to attend the Founder's Day celebration with them despite the teacher also banning them from the event. However things take a turn for the worst when the town's mascot, Frendo the Clown, begins to kill the town's "wayward" youth one by one.

Yes, it’s an enjoyable teen slasher. Not a classic, but damn fun.

Absolutely amazing book!! I did not see the twist at the end coming!

Wow this was better than I expected. I bought it because I loved the title and it was on sale.
The first third of the book is slow and it is essentially a YA book but the story actually worked, For a horror slasher story. The book was a little vague on when it was supposed to take place or maybe just some of the dates didn’t sync correctly. And it’s clearly written by someone who has spent most if not all their life on the east coast as the Midwest stereotypes were quite laughable.

I was really excited to read this book. I had heard great things about it. I don’t know if it was just over-hyped to me or what, but I was somewhat disappointed. It didnt feel like there was enough detail about why things happened.

This better be made into a movie. It’s giving 80’s slasher final girl vibes. It’s a slow start but wait it out the ending is ???

When you're a teen, you feel like everyone is against you. Sometimes they are.
The narrative voice sounds pretty authentic, and there's enough grizzly gore to satisfy any horror fan.

Meh. Didn't hate it but very cliche. Story wasn't awful, gore and violence gave a bit of a higher rating. Overdone teenage characters, adults that were ridiculously overdone. Narrator was awful IMHO , lots of vibrato and over the top voices as well, quite distracting.

I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did tbh. I hadn’t read the synopsis or anything, just dove in and I was waiting for a monster or something supernatural. That twist was awesome. I loved some of the characters- Rust especially. My only gripe is that it went pretty heavy handed with the message. I agree with the message whole heartedly- boomers, am I right?- but it laid it on thick, almost point form with things ridiculous boomers (and republicans let’s be honest) thought and said. It wasn’t enough to sway me from enjoying this. Far more gory than I expected from a YA, but it was awesome.

good book until it tried to say that some redneck missourians throwing a field party would be listening to cardi b and kid cudi

I feel like there is a lot of really good social commentary in this book. It was fun to follow along with and has an important message for the young adults who choose to read it (and us older adults as well). The part that hit me the hardest was the father disiwning his son for different political views. Won't say who to avoid any spoilers. That was something I could really feel. It doesn't have to be that way, and hopefully, this story can help change some of that stigma in the future.

I enjoyed the slasher element, but I didn't see the point of the gay subplot twist. Felt a bit like pandering.

Good YA horror. If you’re into slasher flicks then you will probably love this book since it’s full of action and creative kills. It’s a little more YA than I’ll typically like, but that’s not the books fault. If not for that I would say four stars.
