About this audiobook

Will Darling came back from the Great War with a few scars, a lot of medals, and no idea what to do next. Inheriting his uncle's chaotic second-hand bookshop is a blessing . . . until strange visitors start making threats. First a criminal gang, then the War Office, both telling Will to give them the information they want, or else.

Will has no idea what that information is, and nobody to turn to, until Kim Secretan-charming, cultured, oddly attractive-steps in to offer help. As Kim and Will try to find answers and outrun trouble, mutual desire grows along with the danger.

And then Will discovers the truth about Kim. His identity, his past, his real intentions. Enraged and betrayed, Will never wants to see him again.

But Will possesses knowledge that could cost thousands of lives. Enemies are closing in on him from all sides-and Kim is the only man who can help.

Contains mature themes.

Simply marvellous and throughly entertaining. I’ve always had difficulty understanding British Humour but I’m slowly beginning to. The narrator was just as entertaining as he tries to keep up with pace and mood the book. Highly recommended.

I loved this book. Loved, loved, loved it!! The romance is deliciously steamy, and yet with such undertones of yearning. Will is a solid lead, Kim is a mystery that slowly reveals himself, much like the actual mystery plot, both very interesting to see unfold. The era setting was a delight.
And the story truly shines through Collins' narration, I'm browsing through his repertoire solely on account that the books are narrated by him.

I had the second book before this one by mistake, so now I could understand at last what's going on. Love the the different accents though not always understood everything said ? great characters. Enjoyed the story and the performance.

Re-reading to finally listen to book #3!
K.J. Charles' writing is superb as always and the fact I already read the book once did nothing to lessen my enjoyment of it - I think I even enjoyed it more because the characters were already familiar. This time around I had less trouble with Cornell Collins' voice too.

    Story: 4.5 stars
After reading a few reviews, I waited for the final book to come out before starting this series - and I'm glad I did.

This was a book I didn't know I was in the mood for right now. As always, K.J. Charles' writing is excellent, the characters likable even while I was actively wanting to strangle them (Kim for being a bastard, Will for his pigheadedness - but if they weren't that way where would be the fun?), the setting was a period in history I don't think I ever read about in romance (shortly after WWI ended) so it was new and fun, and the plot was a very engaging mystery/thriller. The mystery part is solved by the end of the book, but the romance was left in a cliffhanger.

Cornell Collins is a new to me narrator and I really enjoyed all his voices and accents. But, because English is not my native sometimes he spoke too fast for me especially when doing the voices of Will and Phoebe, and it was kind of annoying to have to adjust the speed of reproduction all the time. But that was just a minor annoyance, and otherwise the experience was brilliant.

My only regret is that I didn't wait for the audio of the third book to come out before starting the series.

I truly enjoyed the narrator's voice but I just never understood Will's fascination with Kim and how quickly he forgave him for everything.

The book was okay, I liked the main characters Will and Kim well enough, but I didn’t particularly care about the mystery plot nor about their romance. My favorite part of the book is Phoebe and Maisy, I sense some romantic vibes between them. The narrator Cornell Collins has done a fantasy job!

Absolutely fantastic! Fast paced, witty, great character building and world setting. KJ Charles is a phenomenal author

I must say I liked characters complexity, how it's not just about romance but also principals - what one are supposed to choose standing between someone he just met and an occupation?
