About this audiobook

Angus Bjornson only ever wanted to do one thing: to continue crafting exquisite weapons and pieces of armor for his loyal customers. Unfortunately, after one accident too many that leaves the old blacksmith completely disabled, it would seem he has no other choice but to hang up his hammer.

However, that would be underestimating the stubbornness of the self-made man. Fearing he's not going to stop until he ends up dead in his forge, Angus's children offer him a virtual rig that connects to Imperium Games' many universes.

After choosing a fantasy-based world called Alterwelt, Angusnow known as Hephaestus-quickly learns that he can make use of his lifetime of experience by disabling the Auto function and playing on Manual. His skills allow him to create unique items that beat everything sold on the market. But Hephaestus has a long way to go before he can afford his own in-game forge. Moreover, he only ever learned to work with steel while here he has access to metals as strange and exotic as azuraneum, veridium, orichalcum . . .

As an avid gamer, I've always been a lover of gameLit / LitRPG books. Especially so when it comes to immersion based roles such as crafting. Therefore, consider me biased on the topic. That said, I've certainly earned the merit to base my opinion on how realistic or engaging these books are.

True Smithing figuratively burns its worldbuilding into your imagination. Each chapter striking that balance between plot progression and description in a way I found enthralling. I found myself genuinely curious on the terms and actions being expressed, to the point I happily paused the audiobook in order to search real world images to better visualise the descriptions. In this regard, I can say that if you are NOT a fan of medieval style arms and armaments then this book may not be as engaging for you as it was for myself.

The narration by Henry W. Kramer, could be easily dismissed as lacking in character fidelity in relation to female voices; As always, it is rather difficult for a male speaker to give life to a feminine character. That being said, it was a solid attempt in my opinion. The male protagonist and his antagonist were voiced greatly, while the female voices were distinct enough to be (vaguely) identified without descriptors. I would normally expand on this review with my opinion on pace, inflections, etcetera. However, in this occasion since I voluntarily listened to the story on a slower speed and took breaks to research the artefacts and techniques described, I feel that it would not do justice to base my review on the way that I chose to listen. As such, I will merely state that I thoroughly enjoyed the way Kramer voiced this world and its inhabitants and continue to the next in the series...

Forged in fire meets LitRPG! The blacksmithing skills were pretty spot on so if you enjoy crafting, this is an excellent book for you.
