About this audiobook

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Difficult to dredge the memory banks and come up with a book I liked even less than this one..............the biggest pile of mince I have had the sad misfortune to ever read
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Really unique book written from a 5 year old's point of view. It gets a little Repetitive at times but you get through it easy enough. At least two parts will have your heart thumping and you really have no idea how things will turn out. I think it might be a tad over-rated with a lot of 5 star ratings on Amazon but I give it a solid 3 1/5.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really enjoyed it -- it's a good read, told from an interesting perspective. I didn't really know what the book was about when I brought it home from the library, so I was quite surprised at the storyline once I started reading it, seeing as I had just finished reading Jaycee Dugard's memoir. Kinda freaky!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A harrowing story beautifully told. Jack is a delight in the midst of a unimaginable life. Both inside Room and outside he navigates us through the world in subtle ways.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I understand the mixed reviews - this novel at times can seem manipulative, but it is masterful at pushing the readers' buttons, especially during the escape scene. Jack's voice can be twee and obnoxious, (as in that annoying kid from Incredibly Loud and Extremely Close), but we see how the tics in his personality and narration serve as an insulation from the horror that he and his mother are experiencing. It's hard to know how psychologically accurate all of this is, but it's apparent that Donoghue is grasping for realism, and Room succeeds both as a work of imagination and a study in human empathy.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I raced through Room in less than 48 hours, but I'm still unsure how I feel about it. It was certainly an interesting perspective, to feature the entire novel from the mind of a 5 year old child. There have been other 'adult' books featuring the perspective of children during dark times I'm sure, but Room stands out by having a unique scenario.
As interesting as Jack's narrative was there were times after their escape that I wished we were getting more of his mother's perspective. Granted this is because they were separated and we as the reader got no insight into Ma's mental health and how she was coping at all because Jack wasn't told, but at that point, she was the more interesting character.
Ultimately, the book felt more like an exercise - an extremely well-executed one, granted - but there was something stopping me from being able to emotionally connect to the book. 6.4/10 - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5loved it. reading the story told from Jack's point of view was heartbreaking.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved, loved, loved this book! Jack's voice is so true and sweet. The story really made me think, about raising children, trauma and its aftermath, and the resiliency of human nature.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It took me a short while to get used to Jack's narrative style but once I was, I loved the story.
I thought the best part of the book was while Jack and Ma were still in Room but I think that may be because Jack felt secure there. I think his insecurity and confusion made his telling the tale more difficult.
The way the author used Jack's voice to describe what the world appeared to be to him, an outsider, was fantastic. A great way to use the Sociological Eye, I thought.
I was reduced to tears several times - either for happy or sad or just by the powerful emotions the words pulled from me. I think part of it was that I'm a very emotional person but part of it was that I kept imagining my young son in Jack's place.
Room was a great, and at times difficult, read. I highly recommend it. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Liked this very much. I'm very interested in reading some of her other work. I think I'll remember these characters for a long time.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5When I began reading I very soon hoped that the entire novel wouldn't be written in Jack's voice and be solely about Room. I could appreciate a child's voice, but Jack's voice was completely inconsistent. He spent half the time talking in made up words with barely a grasp of grammar, to speaking perfectly good English with the vocabulary of an adult, therefore I just didn't find him to be a believable 5 year old.
That aside I found the first half of the book boring, despite the heavy subject matter. And in all honesty, it really didn't get much better after. I also, despite their ordeal, just could not bond with Ma and Jack.
After reading it I was left wondering whether I should be picking books based on public opinion, as so many seem to love this. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Not a book I was planning on reading but then Emma Donoghue came to the bookstore where I work for a reading & signing; after hearing her read from ROOM and then listening to her talk about the book, as well as her writing in general, I became more than a bit curious. I am SO glad I read this book. It is nothing like what I had originally assumed it would be. It's so original and well-done and speeds along almost like a thriller. In some ways it is a thriller-like situation, but told from a radically different point of view. Instead of hearing from the serial rapist/murderer or from the tortured/murdered victim, we hear the story from a five year old boy's perspective. But there's no gratuitous violence or anything like that. It's just an amazing story about a brave little boy and his loving Ma.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This has been narrated from the point of view of a five year old boy who was born and raised in an 11 foot by 11 foot room. His entire world is in that room and everything else is outer space. This affects how he perceives the world and the way he speaks. It becomes clear that his predicament is due to his mother being kidnapped by "Old Nick" the man who they rely on to bring them essentials from outside when he comes into their securely locked room on his regular visits. They escape, but both mother and boy now have to adjust to life outside.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I was hearing a lot of good things about the film Room staring the ever so beautiful Brie Larson. I saw the film and was excited to read the book. The book and film have generated a lot of buzz so I am sure every one knows what it's about. Jack and his mother are kept in a room by a gross man only known as Old Nick. Jack doesn't know anything else about the outside world. Everything in Room is his world. Even though he watches small amounts of TV, he believes everything he sees is pretend, which was told to him by Ma. The film is told from Jack's perspective and so is the book, and I think the movie is better at portraying the story that way.
Since the novel was narrated by Jack it took away something from it. It watered down what an awesome depressing book it could have been. I couldn't relate to 5 year old Jack and sometimes I couldn't stand him. I am trying not to give away too many spoilers but there is one event towards the very end of the book that really made me dislike Jack. Him and his mother are in this independent living facility and Jack is carrying around "Rug" from "Room" a dirty rug that he was born on and gives his mom a hard time about everything. I understand he's adjusting but he just irritates me.
Since everything is seen through Jacks eyes certain things that would be mind blowing were kind of dumb downed if that makes sense. All the trauma that him and his mother go through we see through Jack and how hes confused about it all. The story isn't bad and I do recommend it (I stayed up all night reading it), I just wished it was told by Ma and not Jack.
Also a side note, the book is available online for free, you just have to do some google searches. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I resisted this book for quite a while, because the story is told in child's voice. In retrospect, I was right.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book was good. It's definitely going to stick with me as a example of the unreliable first person child narrator. It's a hard book, not because of the writing or story which were both great, but because of the trauma and ignorance of the main character(s).Very much enjoyed this book and would highly recommend
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I couldn't get into this at first because the premise is so disturbing but Jack's voice is believable for the most part and it gets interesting.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It's been too long since a book has brought me to tears. Emma Donohue holds back no punches with this book. I can't believe I waited so long to read it. And I can't believe friends originally told me that I wouldn't like it. If you're reading this for the first time, be sure to have tissues at hand. You'll need them.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Writing style is difficult to read. Not my cup of tea
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book was so good! I can't wait to watch the movie as soon as I can find it. I was buddy reading this, though I think if I hadn't been, I probably would have read through this in just one sitting. It really is a super quick read! Also, I highly recommend listening to the audio book. This story is told from a 5 yr old boy named Jack's perspective and in the audio book there was a child telling most of the story, though there was also a female for the adult parts. Jack's mother was kidnapped and locked away in a room for many years and was subjected to rape and abuse. During that time she gave birth to Jack. Jack spends the first 5 years of his life in "Room" thinking that he and his Ma and "Old Nick" are the only real people in the world and that nothing exists outside of "Room". It is an unbelievable story!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I'm going to admit, I was ready to throw in the towel on this book around page 50, but it was my daughter who told me to persevere. Finally, around a hundred pages in, the plot kicked in. After that, I did quite enjoy the book.
However there's frustration as well. I totally understand why the author chose to tell the story from a five-year-old's point of view and for the most part, it was highly effective. Toward the end, however, the story did begin to highlight the limitations of that point of view. I think, because of that, it didn't end so much as stop. I would have liked a bit more resolution, but overall, still a very effective story.
I think a lot of that effectiveness is drawn from the narrator, to be honest. It took what could have been a fairly straightforward and somewhat maudlin tale and elevated it to something more. The author obviously took pains with what to reveal and when and I also believe some of the frustration the reader feels is to allow them to connect better with the adults in the novel, who share that frustration. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing. I think the ending fit perfect and totally closed these characters even though I didn't want to leave them.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Emma Donoghue has reached into my chest, grabbed hold of my heart, ripped it out and then thrown it with tremendous force into the sun which then exploded into a million pieces. That's what it felt like to read this tremendous, emotional novel of a young boy who lives the first five years of his life in captivity with his mother, both prisoners in the Room. I was going to quote choice bits from the novel but I realized I'd be quoting so much of it, I might as well quote the whole thing. I now see why so many of my fellow bibliophiles wouldn't stop talking about this book the year it first came out.
Content warning: Room contains discussion/descriptions of abuse, rape, assault, kidnapping, miscarriages/abortions, and non-explicitly written violence. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book is beautifully written, suspenseful, frustrating, uplifting. It's a major risk to have a five-year-old narrator, but here, Donoghue filters some of the horrors of Room's nightmare while allowing us to feel the effects through Jack's eyes. A worthwhile read. Major thanks to my students who did their reports on Room, which encouraged me to finally pick it up.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Nothing I can say here that hasn't been said, just a very very good book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is definitely a book to read in one sitting, I could not put it down. It's certainly a book that I won't forget in a long time. My only gripe was that at times it was difficult to read, as it was told from a five year old's point of view, however that was what made the book so compelling and so unique. It's really unlike any work of fiction I've read before.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A horrific story described through the perspective of a 5- year old. Riveting tale made palatable with a child narrating his experiences growing up in confinement. The heroic ability of the mother to persevere and raise her son is admirable. The disturbing tale provides insight to the effects of living in isolation and the struggles of intregating back in to society.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Brilliant, simply brilliant. Cannot fault even one word
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Brilliant. Heartbreaking. Brilliant. I am so impressed with Emma Donoghue's handle on language and story telling. I was engrossed in the story and the twists and turns took my breath away at times. I didn't anticipate enjoying Jack's perspective as much as I did, but it added this layer of tension and newness that made it an amazing read. There were a few parts I didn't love - mainly the time Jack spends in his grandmother's house - but overall it was a fantastic book.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5interesting concept
became tedious quite quickly
picked up in the middle
tailed off towards the end
A curious approach to a difficult subject.
