A spellbinding and subversive queer recasting of Arthurian myth by the legendary author of Hild
The girl knows she has a destiny before she even knows her name. She grows up in the wild, in a cave with her mother, but visions of a faraway lake come to her on the spring breeze, and when she hears a traveler speak of Artos, king of Caer Leon, she knows that her future lies at his court.
And so, brimming with magic and eager to test her strength, she breaks her covenant with her mother and, with a broken hunting spear and mended armour, rides on a bony gelding to Caer Leon. On her adventures she will meet great knights and steal the hearts of beautiful women. She will fight warriors and sorcerers. And she will find her love, and the lake, and her fate.
Nebula and Lambda Award-winning author Nicola Griffith returns with Spear, a glorious queer retelling of Arthurian legend, full of dazzling magic and intoxicating adventure.

Editor's Note
Diverse fantasy…
As Peretur’s magical abilities grow, so does her ambition to disguise herself as a man and become a knight on King Arto’s court. After a litany of tests and challenges, she soon discovers her hardest quest yet: revealing her true identity to her over-protective mother. If you’re looking for a diverse fantasy that expertly weaves themes of belonging and home, this queer, gender-swapped retelling of the Medieval tale of Percival and the Holy Grail is a must.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is beautifully written and narrated. It reads like a fairy tale, all mystical and medieval. I hope there will someday be a book two, I’d love to read more about these characters and their adventures!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is such a gorgeous bit of fantasy. It’s not often you see a powerful character go out of their way to be kind, and this one does over and over. She’s a wonderful, lovebale character, as are most of them. This book is a marvel of queerness, relishing in itself and inviting the reader to as well. I loved this book dearly.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely spellbinding. I was utterly enchanted by the language, and then utterly enraptured by the characters. I was nervous that the author may not be able to stick the landing, but she absolutely did.
