Reviews for The Carrion Birds
5 ratings5 reviews
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book is a fine example of Southwestern noir. It is a compelling novel of a search for redemption that turns into a quest for vengeance. A story of family bonds that compels and changes the lives of the two protagonists and those who are touched by their actions.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was my first win on First Reads. This is really out of my normal zone and not a book that I would normally gravitate toward. I completed this book in two sessions. If I didn't have to work, I would have completed in one session. This is a true noir western. I had to keep looking at the picture of the author because it's hard to believe how young he is to have written such a graphic, frightening western type book that is impossible to put down! The genre reminded me of "No Country For Old Men" and it was hard, sometimes to read, I had to keep catching my breath before I could go on. I have to recommend this book as a must read. I will be ordering Mr. Waite's first book, The Terror of Living because I think he will be one of my new favorite authors.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Ray Lamar has made some bad choices in his life. Dangerous people have been involved and innocent people have had to pay. He wants something better. Something he misses from before everything went wrong. A good life with his son. He wants peace and to not have to hurt people anymore. He has a plan and talks to his boss about this being his last job. Tom, Ray's cousin, also made mistakes connected to Ray. He trusted Ray and was burnt. He lost his job as sheriff over a botched drug raid and he could have gone to prison. He would like to be in law enforcement again. He too hopes for a better future.Kelly is the sheriff in the town now, but it is tainted with memories of Tom as her boss. Can she make the decisions she needs to make or is there too much history behind it all? Sometimes the law has a cold heart and sometimes blood blurs the line between good and evil. The Carrion Birds by Urban Waite is rich with drugs, love, trust, violence, hope and betrayal. It is definitely a thriller. It reminds me of writing by CJ Box and Nevada Barr. For most of the book, my heart was in my throat and yet I continued to turn the pages-I had to know what would happen next. I won this from Booktrib. Thank you.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5*I was fortunate to win this novel from Goodreads' First Reads program. The premise of The Carrion Birds was strong, but I just couldn't "get into" the books. The greatest accomplishment and the greatest downfall were the details. There were so many, and it was great to have in some scenes, but overall it slowed down the story. My favorite part: "Day 4." It showed how good the rest of the story could have been if Urban Waite had taken out unnecessary details and added in more incidents.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5When I received a copy of Carrion Birds by Urban Waite I pondered whether or not it could live up to my expectations of Waite’s writing in his previous book, The Terror of Living, happily Carrion Birds is indeed a well written, suspense thriller. I do not often read such violent books dealing with drug trafficking, and maybe that is one component to my enjoying Waite’s books so much, but I rather think it is because he is a superb storyteller with a solid combination of well developed characters, plot, and atmosphere. Carrion Birds is not to be missed by those who enjoy suspense/thrillers.
