AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FIRST, SECOND, AND THIRD EPISTLES OF JOHN AND THE EPISTLE OF JUDE
This study guide covers four fairly short epistles: the first, second, and third epistles of John and the epistle of Jude. The letters have different authors, audiences, purposes, and styles, so we will deal with them individually.
The Epistles of John. First John and Hebrews are the only two New Testament letters that do not assign a proper name to the author and that do not begin with a greeting and introduction of author and recipients. Nevertheless, from the earliest decades, the church fathers—such as Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Tertullian, and Irenaeus—named the apostle John as the author of the books of John. First John does state that the author is among the eyewitness apostles to the life of Jesus and refers to the Word of life
(1 John 1:1). This close alignment with the opening lines of the Gospel of John, as well as the letter’s strong statements against the antichrist
(1 John 2:18), liars
(1 John 2:22), and children of the devil
(1 John 3:10) all fit the gospel portrayal of the apostle John and reflect an intimate familiarity with the teachings of Jesus as they are presented in the gospels.
The style and content of 2 and 3 John are very similar to the first letter, suggesting the same author. The author refers to himself in these letters as elder,
a term of affection and church leadership, rather than apostle. By this time, few in the church would have doubted John’s authority. Early church fathers claimed John the apostle as the author.
The three letters attributed to John likely were written from Ephesus, where John appears to have had a role similar to that of a modern-day bishop or district superintendent over seven major bodies of believers in Asia Minor. Church history states that John made his ministry headquarters in Ephesus after the ascension of Jesus and that he provided a home for Mary, the mother of Jesus, in that city. A major Christian church was established in Ephesus as well as a discipleship school led by Tyrannus, where the apostle Paul taught for two years (Acts 19:9–10).
All of the letters were likely written between A.D. 85 and 95.
The first letter of John was written to help a church struggling under the influence of a heresy very similar to Gnosticism. This heresy had been taught throughout Asia Minor by a man named Cerinthus, and John’s letter was likely intended for circulation throughout all of the churches in Asia Minor. The letter contends strongly that Jesus is both fully divine and fully human. It also proclaims that right belief goes hand-in-hand with right conduct and that true faith produces love, forgiveness, and effective prayer.
