    Dying Alive

Dawn broke to the chilling chorus of the famished undead. Jake lay in a soldier’s state of semi-alert rest; his eyelids shot open at the first sign of movement. He stiffened and the body he held captive between his tense biceps instinctively froze. The moment of acclimation stretched as the pair mutually gained their bearings. The bluing of the night sky, the heavy snoring surrounding them, the updrafts moving with the nose-biting briskness of an October morning and carrying the scent of the dead. Like camping. Almost, Em and Jake each silently recollected.

Em turned in toward Jake’s chest, inhaling his musky scent deep into her lungs. His hand caressed the back of her head, as he breathed her in. You sleep okay?

    Oh, I didn’t really sleep.

Her left leg rose over his, hooking up near his hip and dangling behind him.

    Ahem.

That had to be the most awkward throat-clearing I have ever heard. What do you want, Six?

The shadow of twilight masked the features of the young man’s face, but Em recalled the mild features beneath the innocuous glasses. Nah, nothing. I mean, I didn’t see anything, he added. I’m just coming back from, uh, taking a piss.

Well, good thing you paused to put it delicately.

    Oh, shrugged the slight figure.

Em sat up, rubbing her arms against the enveloping chill. Well I’m going to go test the waterproofing of those silicone seals over there. She extricated herself from the manly security of Jake’s arms. Moving swiftly to the indicated corner of the rooftop, Em disappeared behind a large rectangular unit
