INTRODUCTION

Today there is a brutal, vicious, worldwide fight going on. This fight is not between families or clans. It is not between countries or provinces. It doesn’t centre around political differences or divergent worldviews. And this fight did not start recently. It has been raging for millennia, even since before the creation of Adam and Eve.

This fight is between God and Satan, between God’s holy angels and Satan’s evil powers of darkness.

This fight involves every human being and every spirit. It cannot be avoided. You and I are also included in this fight.

Our first ancestors, Adam and Eve, listened to Satan’s lies and ruined the perfect life that God had planned for us. Because they obeyed Satan, they ended up becoming his slaves and living under his control. Their sin against God opened the way for all kinds of sickness and evil to invade and ruin the beautiful world that God had made.

Fortunately, God had compassion for our lost and hopeless lives. He paid a great price by sending his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, from heaven to come down to this earth. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil and to bring us back into the family of God. Satan hates this plan and rages with anger. He has tried his best in every way to ruin God’s plan of salvation.

Even today, Satan is still at work. Many people are being threatened, deceived, and pulled away from following the Lord Jesus. Being a Christian is not easy. We are involved in spiritual fighting every day. But Jesus set the perfect example, and taught us to be courageous. In his Word, the Bible, he said: I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world (John 16:33). As Christians, we can rejoice in knowing that Jesus has already defeated Satan. If we claim Jesus’ strength, we can gain victory over the sin and evil of this world.

Revelation 21:7 is of great encouragement to us. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

1 HOW DID SATAN COME TO BE?

We know that Satan is our enemy. But how did this come to be?

Was he created by God?

Why is Satan God’s enemy?

Why is it that God allows him to do so many cruel and evil things?

Answers to these important questions can be found in God’s Word, the Bible.

Some Christians have wrong ideas about Satan. They think that Satan has existed from the very beginning and has power and authority almost equal to God. The Bible tells us that this is not true. Only God was there before anything else. Satan was created with all the other things by God himself. John 1:1-3 says,

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made, without him nothing was made that has been made.

When God created Satan, he was one of God’s angels. God made him as a good angel along with the other angels. But then one day, Satan became proud and wanted to become like God himself. When God saw what this angel was trying to do, he cast him out of heaven.

The Bible provides several illustrations to help us understand what happened to Satan.

The king who fell

In Ezekiel 28, God mentioned several interesting attributes about the king of Tyre.

At that time, the city of Tyre was rich with money, resources, and many possessions. The king boasted about both his kingdom and his greatness. But it was at this time that the prophet Ezekiel approached the king and rebuked him because of his pride. In the middle of his speech, Ezekiel abruptly changed his tone and started speaking directly to Satan. Ezekiel did this because Satan was the true king of Tyre and God was talking about him.

This is what God said about Satan in Ezekiel 28:12-17.

"You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topas and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.

You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.

You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you.

Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.

Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendour. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before the kings."

Although Satan was created as a good angel, he soon became proud and rebellious. And because God cannot tolerate sin, he righteously threw Satan out of heaven.

The star that fell

The Prophet Isaiah also says similar things about Satan.

How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit (Isaiah 14:12-15).

Before Satan rebelled, he was a high-ranking angel in charge of other angels. Though he was given power, authority, and great beauty, Satan still was not content with the title and position that God had given him. Because he strongly desired to gain God’s glory, he began to exalt himself and make himself equal with the Most High God. As a result of this sin, God threw Satan out of heaven.

Today Satan continues to crave power and honour. He is burning with anger and is trying his best to ruin everything God has created. He has become the bitter enemy of God and of all Christians.
