How to Attend Any Networking Event and Be Cool, Calm and Confident - Patricia Ryan
BIOGRAPHY
INTRODUCTION
Networking is an essential part of building wealth.
Armstrong Williams
In our business and personal lives we all have a Network or group of people that we interact with. Our parents, our siblings, the local butcher, newsagent, café owner, hairdresser, our boss, work colleagues, school and/or university friends - Our Network.
They look out for us and assist us. They share our good times and our bad. They are the ones we call on when we need to move house and are looking for a helping hand, when a new baby is born, when we win first prize, when we need a reference….
Ah…… but are they the people we call on when we need a reference?
Depending upon what the reference is for, it will depend upon who you will need to call. If you are going for a new job, chances are the last person you want to know is your current boss therefore you wouldn’t call on them. Also it would not be ideal to call on your current work colleagues, in case they inadvertently let something slip. So… who can you call on?
If you are looking to join a club, often you need someone in the club to sponsor you and you may also need someone to give a reference for you. These referees need to be members of the same club you want to join.
Networking through events, functions, sports and other face to face activities is still the best way to build your Network. Networking at these types of events is still the best way to receive business referrals. You will be building a group or ‘Network’ of contacts that you can call on when you are looking to get things done. These could be business or personal. For example you may need to get the kitchen renovated; would you prefer to use a kitchen renovator you found in the yellow pages or someone you have met earlier either through a personal friend, business associate or association? Would you prefer to place your business financials in the hands of a stranger or someone you had met through a business or personal event?
Conversely what would you prefer? A) to get the Yellow Pages out and ring everyone in your target industry to try to get an appointment to sell your product, or B) meet someone face to face at a personal or business event, build a relationship and work towards assisting them in filling their needs?
I know what my answer is to all the above and I find meeting people at events and functions brings me success on every occasion.
This comes down to knowing how to Network professionally and personally. In the grand scheme of life we are all Networking every day whether we realise it or not.
I have been ‘professionally’ networking for well over 20 years. I have been involved in networking organisations as a member and as an active Committee Member. By the way, being a Committee Member is more lucrative when it comes to reward for effort – but that is for another time and another book.
In this book you will learn the skills I have acquired over these many years of Networking; Networking with many different cultures and at every level of business.
When most people think about getting out there and Networking it scares them. Others believe that those who are out there Networking are insincere. Some will often come across as selfish due to the way they conduct themselves.
In this book I will concentrate on how to attend a networking event and do so confidently, with a relaxed persona - whether you are there for business or pleasure.
The reality is that Networking is about building a Network of ‘contacts’, or a community of people you can work with to assist and to be assisted by.
It is easy for most of us to be friendly and giving towards those we know. Also if we know someone on a personal level
