- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Ehh. This is an easy read that is relatively free from controversy. I think the points could have been made in far fewer pages, and it wasn't a long book. I shy away from the idea of "claiming" obscure Biblical promises for myself, but I don't think this crosses any lines of orthodoxy. It's not a bad book, and it takes no time at all to read, but there are much better options out there.**The best book I've ever read on the subject of raising children is Douglas Wilson's "Future Men." If you haven't read it, you'd be much better served starting there than with this book. With respect to the topic of "cultural decline," I'd suggest starting with Neil Postman's "Amusing Ourselves to Death," and following that up with Michael Horton's "Christless Christianity."

To live in the covenant of a Christian family has been our greatest privilege and duty in our earthly pilgrimage.
We dedicate The Promise of Jonadab to our four children:
Raymond, Richard, Dorothy and Rieppe.
"The Promise of Jonadab offers a fast-paced read and a worthy Bible study with obvious applications to life in a time when many Christians feel besieged by moral and cultural collapse. Some will find it far more substantive and timely in its application than The Prayer of Jabez."
—JOSEPH FARAH
CEO, WorldNetDaily
Ray and Gail’s book is both visionary and practical. Young parents, especially, will find sound suggestions here for putting intentional fiber into the habits and standards of the families they are called to lead.
—JOEL BELZ
Founder, World Magazine
I have known Ray and Gail Moore for over two decades. Their love for Jesus, their love for their neighbors, and their love for family has resulted in a worthy legacy. Any time spent with them in person or through this book is an investment worth making.
—MARK L. EARLEY
President and CEO, Prison Fellowship
"Nothing should be more important to Christian parents than the continued strong faith of their children and following generations of the family. The Promise of Jonadab speaks to parents’ hearts. Biblical history, personal anecdotes, examples from around the world. It makes for powerful Christian parents."
—T. C. PINCKNEY, BRIGADIER GENERAL, USAF RET.
Editor, Baptist Banner
Former 2nd Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention
The first step...of claiming Jonadab’s promise is unswerving loyalty to God’s Word. The Word of the Lord prevailed over and governed the house of Jonadab.
This quote by the Moores in The Promise of Jonadab is a perfect summary of their own lives, thus adding credence to their invaluable insights and most urgent instruction for families in our day.
—JUDY ROGERS
Christian songwriter/recording artist
Lt. Col. E. Ray Moore, Jr. is indefatigable in his representation of the Lord’s heart for families. He wants parents and children to know that the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry
(Ps. 34:15).
—REV. DET BOWERS
Senior Pastor, Christ Church of the Carolinas
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
We wish to thank first our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the grace in the early years of our marriage to practice the Scriptures in the area of Christian family principles. Novices for sure, we found practical guidelines in the Word of God. We read some helpful books by faithful writers during that time as well, and supportive examples from families and teachers also encouraged us. Now our four adult children exhort us by their devoted walk with Lord. The legacy represented by our six grandchildren thus far fills us with unspeakable joy especially as some have already begun to follow the Lord faithfully.
About twelve years ago our friend, Michael Royal, first shared his discovery of Jonadab’s heritage with Ray. Our subsequent study of Jonadab and Christian family principles over the years has made some of the themes in this book our life message and central to our ministry. Ray still remembers traveling on Interstate 77 through central West Virginia with Michael discussing Jonadab. That memory often reminds us never to miss an opportunity for sharing a verse or text that the Lord is teaching us. It may help other travelers along their journey and always brings glory to God. Jonadab has been our family companion since then, and we are thrilled to have the occasion to tell his story.
We give many thanks to Elise Edson for getting all the parts of the manuscript correctly arranged and in an orderly manner and to Lawrie Sikkema for her suggestions and helping in the ministry office. Ray’s brother Tom gave critical help throughout the process, and without the keen insight from our daughter Dorothy, the final version would not have been so reader friendly. Our many colleagues in the Frontline Ministries and the Exodus Mandate Project continue to make our vision and mission for the Christian family and Christian education possible. We are grateful for the several ministers, Dennis Newell, Frank Edson and Lee Adams, who read the manuscript and gave their counsel and for the untold friends who have prayed.
The research into the idea of a Christian family legacy and the discovery of some living examples was so gratifying. We are indebted to the many solid and faithful Christian families we have come to know over the years that have set the bar so high. We hope and pray that this little volume will bless Christian families not only to survive, but to overcome, thrive and advance the kingdom of God in this time of cultural decline.
Thanks to Ambassador International, our publisher, for taking on this little book and giving us the prospect of making the promise of Jonadab known.
What Jonadab did in his family and the faithfulness of his descendants has worked for time and eternity. Not a king nor a prophet, not a judge nor a general, just a father, he lived in the darkest of times for the people of God, yet he succeeded as a parent. He was so successful in fact that, other than to the patriarchs, God made the most extraordinary promise for a father concerning Jonadab. The Church needs to discover and apply the principles that assured that his family would serve the Kingdom of God. Christian parents, struggling to honor God through the legacy they leave, can cull some principles and practices to make their faith and labor equally successful today. We pray that you will learn from Jonadab, the ordinary man who was an
