Chapter 1 - Scoutorama.com's Official Handbook
Hundreds of thousands of Scouters visit www.scoutorama.com each month. They’ve been doing so since 1996. Each year we receive countless emails asking for secret pinewood derby speed tips, and exasperated pleas from derby contestants for advice on how to build derby cars.
Over the years, we’ve also collected a lot of information from veteran derby masters who share their experience and ideas with scoutorama.com. We’ve gone through all this material, and combined it with our own experience and experiments with derby cars. Now for the first time, we’ve compiled all this information into one book.
The writing and editing fell to me. I learned the derby trade under the skilled eye of my venerable father. He has 6 sons and has built many derby cars. He passed on his secrets to his sons, along with a legacy of having helped each son build at least one first place car during each of their Derby Years. And he gets peculiar joy from rubbing it in. Now with five kids of my own, I have had many opportunities to expand my father’s secrets and add my own.
I hesitated to write this book, because I still have a few kids to help through the Derby Years. If this advice should fall into the hands of my competitors, I might lose my edge. So if you live in my neighborhood, please do the honorable thing and stop reading this book. Just kidding (kind
