How to Choose the Best Assisted Living or Nursing Home - Tonia Boterf
Introduction
Although this guide is written from the standpoint of choosing a residential option for an elderly parent, it’s relevant for any senior adult. You may be making this determination for yourself or helping another relative make this important decision.
The information and assessment tools included here will help you look at assisted living facilities and nursing homes through the eyes of a person living there. You can then get a better feel for the type of environment and services provided. You also can obtain information that’s crucial to making an informed choice of the best place to meet your needs or those of your senior relative. The goal is be as happy as possible with your decision.
Do Your Homework
Not all assisted living and nursing homes are created equal. They may be licensed facilities, but the differences within each type of residence are huge. Services, prices, add-ons, allowances, staffing, and other details vary greatly and thus need to be carefully considered for the best results. Moving to a new location at a later stage in life can be more trying than at any other time, and you want to make it as easy as possible. Take your time to do your homework, make a decision, and plan the move in detail.
If you’re not sure what services or accommodations your elderly parent might need, it’s strongly recommended that you complete The Practical Expert’s Senior Adult Daily Living Skills Assessment Tool.
This assessment is extremely comprehensive. You may, in fact, determine that your parent doesn’t need to move into any type of facility; rather, you may decide that with services, accommodations, and adaptations, the person can remain in his or her own home.
How to Use This Guide
This assessment guide begins with ideas on how to plan a move that will have the least negative impact on the senior adult. You then can choose to complete either the assisted living or nursing home assessment.
