About this ebook

This is the story of a conversation between a retired cannery worker and someone who just met him. Read how the man reminisces mostly positively about his childhood, moving up to management within the cannery, marriage, children and his more ambivalent and negative thoughts on working class life, drinking, rock and roll hedonism, and the pitfalls of 8-track tapes.

For sixty-five years, I have sat on this porch, the old man said.

    Sixty-five years? I asked.

    Yes, sixty-five years, he replied.

So, you've lived in this same house for your whole life? I asked.

Yes, for my whole life, I've lived in this house, the old man said.

What's the story behind that? I asked.

The old man replied, Well, you see, I was born at the hospital down the street about three blocks from here, right? And then my parents had me and I lived here with my two brothers, right?

    OK, I said.

The old man continued, And you know, it was a real treat growing up here, I mean, it was a treat. Dad worked hard, and usually came home with a smile on his face, Mom worked around the house. Anyways, my father worked at a cannery, running machines that put stuff in cans. Mostly tomatoes, you know, like crushed tomatoes and such, and also tomato sauce, and you know, he didn't like the job, so he smiled when he came home, not just because he was glad to be home from working, but because he liked to see us, you know?

Well, it sounds like you had a nice family life, I said.

The old man said, "Oh, well, you know, it wasn't all great. Sure, it was pretty nice, but you know, Dad did drink a bit, or rather, quite a bit. I would hesitate to call him a full-blown alcoholic, but he definitely had tendencies in that direction. He drank Schlitz, and sometimes this or that brand of whatever
